ARRRRRGGGH!

Just typed LOADS on Press / Promotions etc... and then lost the whole fucking thing. . .

Anyhow, here's goes again... Icon_evil

maybe a little shorter than the last time but it will do...

Statto Wrote:ok so

what are we aiming to do?

send press releases just to dnb main websites & magazines?
should we be sending out to alternative genre media?
to general dance music media?
just in the UK or worldwide?
are we considering paying for advertisements?
what are we promoting - the music, the label philosophy, both?
different promotional angles for different areas of interest?
don't press releases often go out with promos? i.e. shouldn't press and promotions operations be co-ordinated?

(Talking about the promo CD...)
B Wrote:People that it needs to be sent to ....

metalheadz camp - all major labels infact
Knowledge mag - all magazines
all distribution companies
individual djs that are influential including andy c!!!

...

Okay, yes Statto, press and promotions need to be co-ordinated.
In other words there should be a press piece to accompany any promo CD going to a magazine / website / DJ. The press piece should promote the music AND philosophy of Subvert Central Recordings. Not too heavy on the philosophy mind!

Downwiththat

...

I think Statto, Exxon and Phokus should look after the press and promotions for the UK.
B can look after Ireland and the rest of Europe.
ESB has the connections to publicise things in the States and Canada.

I reckon we should hit every possible D&B publication, website and radio station.

As for the wider music community. Yes we should try to spread the word here too... but we can be selective, there's no point in hitting Kerrrrrrang for instance. SMASH HITS might be worth a go though... if you can sort out some Alpha Omega stickers.

As for different promotional angles for different areas of interest, I'll leave that upto you, that's your job!

Now... to go into detail on what you suggested B...

Magazines / Radio / Websites
Yes, Knowledge as you said, also ATM... is that mag "Atmosphere" still going???

Also pirate stations would be worth a go...
UK people! Are Rude FM and Rude Awakening still going?
How bout Kool?
Also, do a bit of research to see which are the most listened to web radio shows...

Websites: Any sites that publish news articles should be contacted...

Labels
Yeah, it would be a good idea to send promo CDs to some of the D&B labels outside of the circle of friends (i.e. Inperspective, Bassbin, Offshore, Warm etc)... actually can someone compile a comprehensive list of the like minded labels - they'll need CDs too.

I've picked the labels that have nights running that might give a promo CD some play (e.g. Hospital, Renegade Hardware and Metalheadz).
Also I've included some labels that have been (until the last few years) slightly more out "on a limb". I'm hoping that on hearing a CD full of mad beatz they might ask themselves what the fuck they've done to their labels over the last few years and maybe be influenced to return to the wild days of their youth!

So:
Metalheadz
Reinforced
Renegade Hardware
Valve
Hospital
Eastside
Commercial Suicide
CIA
Timeless
Outbreak / Biotic
Full Cycle

Any others???

DJs
Okay, I gave up on listening to the "name" DJs a good while back, so maybe some of you can add to this list... the only DJs With influence that I can think of that might even consider playing any of the SC stuff are:

Fabio
Grooverider
L Double
Storm
Ray Keith
Suv
Digital
Spirit
Klute
A-Sides
Andy C
Friction
Nicky Blackmarket
Dara

Obviously Bailey and Flight as well.

Anyone that can suggest more?

Right.

That's plenty to debate and deliberate over...

Off you go!

Good.

Wink
kinda in the same context, get the Internet connection on the go, have the SC tunes bouncing about on AIM to producers for the cd massif or some sort server where (chosen people???) can download some 320kbps mp3's of the forthcoming material.

lets be honest loads of people use cd players now, so you gotta exploit it

don't forget our wonderful stateside mag... RINSE!!!! Grin Wink

Yes, Knowledge as you said, also ATM... is that mag "Atmosphere" still going???

ATM is the magazine formerly known as Atmosphere. The only other one that springs instantly to mind is Breakin' Point. iDJ maybe?

Kool's still going as far as I know. Ruud is too, I think. Haven't listened to pirates for ages though.

Web radio wise in the UK: phuturefreq.com, ukrumble.com, pyrotechnics (if they're still going, not sure)...

Quote:Websites: Any sites that publish news articles should be contacted...

So DOA, DNBA, dnbscene, dnbforum, dnbhq, londondnb... um, more will spring to mind later!
What about the slightly more mainstream and specialist music magazines?

So Mixmag and DJ magazines, praps Jockey Slut, as well as mags like Sound on Sound, Future Music and Computer Music, and maybe even Audio Media (the posh mag!)?

I can see the point of sending things to Mixmag, DJ, Jockey Slut... but why send to the music production mags? Do they run that sort of item? (I haven't read them for ages, so I'm a bit out of touch!)
Music Production magazines! Good idea Duffah!

Phokus - I remember buying "The Mix" before (I think that was the name anyway) and it had a 10 or 12 page focus on some of the artists that were making D&B at the time... (this was in the glory days of '95). They featured Goldie and Rob Playford, Roni Size, Photek, 4 Hero, Jack Smooth. Then there was "KJZ" by Photek on the cover CD and a track by Jack Smooth too!
The problem you will have with the types like JockeySlut etc .......... is that they will be likely to pigeonhole you straightaway and will pass judgement on what you are doing, this can instantly damage the cause that people are working toward.

Yeah they do, especially if its interesting production....you might even get an article about one of the subverts studios on there...

PROMO'S

If you guys are doing a promo's list keep the number of vinyl promo's to a minimum initially....

Make sure you hit people with CDs of the releases at least 2 / 3 months in advance of the release if possible. This allows time for them to filter through to the radio / interweb / clubs etc, another benefit of this may be that it will let people live with the tracks for awhile and they'll more than likely grow on them....

Also really look into doing online promo's.....like fiasko mentioned its a cheap and easy way to manage mailing lists.

Im writing a web based application that lets you manage your mailouts.....so you guys can beta test it if you like, but it wont be ready for another month or so.

With the promo's too, release about 10-20 of each release on white label to the big online record shops a month before the release....there's no end of promo lunatics out there on the interweb that will snap them up and hopefully create a bit of hype about them.

Other DJ's

UK
Fresh
Dylan
Hype
Marky
Zinc
Goldie

US
Dieselboy
AKAI 1200
Sage

Even though some of those typically may not do it, all it takes is for one of those to play one of your releases to seriosuly increase the labels profile....

Make sure you send the alternative massive at BBC stuff like John Peel and so on.
beckett Wrote:yeah they do, especially if its interesting production....you might even get an article about one of the subverts studios on there...

ok, cool :d

Quote:dylan

Sorry to be a picky bastard but Fresh is a US DJ now Oops
Good suggestions Beckett.

And to go back to Fiasko's sugggestion about uploading mp3's of the forthcoming releases for chosen people ... can we do this on the Streetbeats site, or will we have to wait until the Subvert Cental Site is done?

While yer here Beckett - know of any cheap hosting?

Anyone?
Altered Ego Wrote:Sorry to be a picky bastard but Fresh is a US DJ now Oops

just off the top of yer head like...i will do some thorough research at the weekend!
Don't forget eclectic folks like Ross Allen,Mary Anne Hobbs,Annie Nightingale? Jo Wiley,Giles Peterson,Patrick Forge,Mixmaster Morris.
Does Straight no Chaser still run? They occasionally used to do bits on the more soulful side of dnb - they had Fabio and Bukem on the cover a couple of years back, kind of a Speed retrospective. They're also up on the broken beats thing, so the Reinforced connection (Alpha Omega) and the downtempo biz might pique their interest.

Also Wire maybe?

Getting press releases and promos to Peel, Giles Peterson, Patrick Forge etc would be good. Also (on a limb) Radio 3 types like late Junction ,especially when the Polska stuff gets released. This sort of thing will expand the market fot the tunes - it would be good if other people than just dnb 'kids' got interested in the label and concept.

(re Giles Peterson etc - sorry AO just noticed your post)
ALPHA OMEGA Wrote:Don't forget eclectic folks like Ross Allen,Mary Anne Hobbs,Annie Nightingale? Jo Wiley,Giles Peterson,Patrick Forge,Mixmaster Morris.

And John Peel. Even Jools Holland ?????

And I think Beckett should be chief press officer, look at his avatar!

:mutley:
My ex-journo colleague sat across from me informs me that The Wire may be receptive to the stuff - they like their electronica, the reviews editor is a guy called Chris Bohn.
Kingsley Marshall, Spectraz, Kodwo Eshun, Hyperdub.com

ok.....lemme wake up, clean the cobwebs from my head and regroup my thoughts and i'll be back to give you my ideas, thoughts and suggestions.

it's 6:30am here and i have only had one cup of coffee and no shower.

ah now you've hit it — this is something I've been thinking about: how to interest The Wire in this stuff

yes, the Reviews editor is Chris Bohn — maybe send stuff to him
or else to Philip Sherburne (Critical Beats reviewer) or even Ken Hollings (electronica)

true indeed. the wire always leans towards things that a little
more left of center to begin with.
