Paradox - A Certain Sound - TimeTouristDnB - 5th February 2019 I'm probably very late with this as most sampling and production subverts are long gone .... but has someone ever found the source of the intro ambience in Paradox's 'A Certain Sound'? I'm not talking about the vocal sample which is obviously from Dune (1984) but rather about the creepy alien-type of noises that blend into a soothing atmosphere. Listening to it I imagine some 80's type of sci-fi horror movie but in reality it's probably something else like most samples surprisingly are, haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4PeZ6YsbQ8 RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - DJ ML - 5th February 2019 There are still some of us left! Just dont expect pages of answers nowdays! No, never had crossed my mind tbh. this thread http://subvertcentral.com/forum/thread-43037.html?highlight=chocky may be of interest!? RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - TimeTouristDnB - 5th February 2019 Yeah I remember that thread, I even posted there! haha The Chocky/Nucleus sample was from some obscure 80's library record called Red Kite (track B12 'Curlews') https://www.discogs.com/Astral-Sounds-Red-Kite/release/1594828 Sells for mad prices but the album is on Youtube if anyone want to listen. RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - indigo - 7th February 2019 This is how the story goes. One night Paradox went to a pond full of mating frogs and recorded them. Then he added the echo effect to the recording, and the final version of the background sound in the track was ready Check out his set at Sun and Bass from 2009 when he played that frog intro to the crowd https://vimeo.com/10511072 RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - TimeTouristDnB - 7th February 2019 (7th February 2019, 06:06)indigo Wrote: This is how the story goes. I really want to believe .... Also, that video.... for a sec I was thinking he's really about to tell that frogs story for the lolz. RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - indigo - 7th February 2019 I wouldn't be surprised if he'd shared his story about how he created the track. He usually tells stories about breaks, sampling etc. during his sets. The guy is on a mission. Take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMoVCndpwFY RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - TimeTouristDnB - 9th February 2019 Paradox is a badman for pulling off a live show like that. Shame I haven't seen him play yet! The crowd looks boring btw. RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - Muttley - 9th February 2019 Seen Dev 4 times...once at Rupture, once at Technicality, twice at IChiOne, as Alaska and Paradox, respectively. RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - indigo - 10th February 2019 I wish I saw Paradox live. As a matter of fact, a show with any DJ playing drumfunk would be just fine. I'm not asking for much. I saw Doc Scott live for the first time last fall. He played the 2-step nonsense that sounded almost like techno for two hours. I was hoping that he would include at least one track with the amen break in his set. It did not happen. I was extremely disappointed, and couldn't believe it was the same guy who created "Here Come the Drumz", "Drumz 95", "The Unofficial Ghost", and "Shadow Boxing". I don't want to be misunderstood. Big respect to him for shaping the scene in the 90s, but what I heard that night was nowhere close to the music he used to play in the Blue Note era. Sorry for going off-topic, but I had to vent my frustration somewhere... RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - TimeTouristDnB - 11th February 2019 ^ I know exactly where you're coming from mate! I feel the same about contemporary dnb DJ culture. Back on topic: Does anyone remember if they broadcasted The Outer Limits (1995) in the UK back then? Channel 4 or Sci Fi perhaps? I can imagine this show featuring an episode about breeding alien eggs or mutant frogs that might have this sound effect... Alternatively does anyone remember other TV shows with a similar theme from around that time? (1995/1996) RE: Paradox - A Certain Sound - Muttley - 11th February 2019 I can't help you of course. Well maybe. The Danny Breaks 96 documentary was on SC. But for everyone else: it's a pond of condenser microphone recorded frogs, quite easy to do. To get the A Certain Sound sound effect, any reverb and delay pedal with the right tweaking gives the effect. It's like chorus effect; what frogs are known for as well.
