    Drums

Well I had my very first Drum lesson last night and I must say I really enjoyed it, just learning the basics at the moment and I was wondering could anyone reccomend any good books on the subject, just something simple with practice tips and the like.

go to www.vicfirth.com (i think it is), and go to the education centre. watch the first two or three of mark wessels snare lessons, and most of dom famularo's (esp the ones with jim chapin in )

practice double strokes, paradiddles and the stick control exercise (from wessels' 2nd or 3rd vid) for 30 minutes a day and you'll be a fukkin badman in a year or two.

call me a traditionalist, but this is the foundation.

you'll find these 2 at most musical instrument stores that stocks books. ask your teacher about them, he may have checked this out. they're classic.

if you want to play the drums seriously, you'll have to have a handle on these sorts of things eventually. (unfortunately)

but if you love it, it becomes fun in a perverse sort of way.

keep taking lessons, and just play as much as possible.

it's a gnarly hobby at any rate!

the single most important thing i have ever learned in drumming with regard to physical technique is:

    think down

watch famularo's vids on the vic firth site - where he says about bouncing the basketball. keep that in the front of your mind when you hold the stick and play, and your technique will become more and more efficient. it's absolutely revolutionised my previously neanderthal, stick-squeezing, vein-busting, white-knuckle playing into something much smoother and more efficient.

the only book that dodz missed out is the essential:

it's geared towards jazz and bebop, but the core thing is the development of coordinated independence - essential in any drumming style.
