Handling mad-panned stereo breaks without simply going mono?

    hello fiends

yeah, the title/dilemma is pretty self-explanatory.....

a real workflow killer that i'm often faced with when i come to slice 'n dice an awesome sounding break - you love the width and widea-arse vintage feel of the whole thing, but then it aint the 60's anymore and that super-tough kick and snare would be good in BOTH speakers

    so.......

are there any tips for retaining some of that depth of stereo field AND keeping the main hits centred, so to speak?

many thanks my good fellows, and much love

ps apologies if this question is utter bollocks

Had the same thing 2 days ago (again). There's a few options.

Someone linked a free plug on here that will mono everything below a certain point, that'll do... I prefer Voxengo soniformer where you can draw your own width curve - ie the same but more tweakable.

Or there's the 'same thing on two tracks, mono one of them, lowpass it at X Hz, highpass stereo at X Hz and adjust to best sound or taste or whatever' thing.

cool, will check for those plugs - was thinking something like that might be handy, but still getting head around mac (and it's lack of plugs....!)

will def try the mono plus stereo trick too, had a similar thought using 3 copies - one mono, 1 left channel mono and one right chsnnel mono then pumping up the 'drum light' side with a limiter or something.

thanks again macc, knew you'd get in first on this one!

ps would feel friendlier to call you bob, but feel cheeky as i don't even know you. my real name's maff, btw

    cheers

You could manually chop the relevant hits across a number of panned and centred monos.

ie. kd and sd down the middle eqed for weight and then re-intorduced the stereoness of the other hits using panned channels hi/low passed depending on what is nessecary.

tbh I work all my breaks using mono channels.
