It's not exactly a Joe Meek circuit... In fact it's not at all really It can do four styles of compression, as it tailors the attack and release curves as well as the frequency shaping of the sidechain dependent on the mode knob. Mode 4 of this is the Meek-style one, but apparently it's not exactly the same.

The bloke Ted (who has been really cool by email!) designed the famous early Meek circuits, but has carried on designing and lecturing etc in audio. So it is kind of a relation of Meek, but not a descendant.

But it's not mine anyway I need a big fat character eq more than I need this anyway though.

    It's here

    Looking tasty too!

Will look very nice next to the Avalon... Will sound better with the Avalon's HOT output pushing the input transformer.

    Oiiiiiii

This thing is NICE. Just spent 30 minutes running audio through the analogue path (Avalon > P3 sorting out gain staging and so on before I even turned the compressor section on Running things in the red at the input of the P38 makes things sound big, chunky and open. Proper nice range of tones I can get now, just with gain staging (not even counting the Avalon tubes) The Avalon's compressor make up gain amp to drive the P38 is Mc Nice

Then there's the compressor itself, which does an invisible dB or so right up to 100:1 1176 smashup nastiness and everything in between The Green Box mode will be the main one when I need compression in mastering I think, it punches like a mother.

The width knob as well - AMAZING. Never heard a width thing like it. You can just turn up the sides but without really changing the mix as usually happens, all without any phase changes or anything. Amazing, I can't get over it!

    shit that sounds cool

so you use it for mastering only or for making tunes?

why not just use the avalon? is the idea to have different stuff for different tunes or just to combine lots at once? two compressors and two eqs on mastering seems a bit much like it would change the sound in a way thats getting into the creative side more than mastering should (not to say it wouldnt sound great)?

Anything and everything That's why I wanted it though, as it is a versatile machine.

    Cos it sounds different

Whatever! But the cumulative benefits of several different processors - not doing much, but just being there - are plain to hear! I got what I'd say was my bestest mix ever and just using gain stages before level matching to the original made it sounds better, more alive etc etc.

Not at all - it all depends what they are doing. Two eqs is very reasonable, well, standard really. Surgery + tone, maybe another one cos it works better in the highs/lows or whatever. Two compressors both doing 0.5dB can sound very different to one doing 1dB - but it is still only 1dB, and so not really creative compression. And by doing that you're giving the signal a bit more *wince* warmth from running it through good gear innit.

It all depends what the tune needs, what sounds best, what works, what doesn't.... Silly example, but if something needs 10 compressors and 10 eqs to get the right result, then that's what it needs! Obviously it gets to a point where you're doing more harm than good, but I've almost always found lots of little cumulative changes rather than carving with one thing gives better results.

cool, always interesting to know how people use this stuff

they recommend trying two chained with that abbey road plug, which i thought was a bit  to picture what its actually doing

Kind of like beer. 1 is good, sometimes 2 is better, sometimes 10 is even better. Sometimes it's too much though

Did it come with a free box of tissues, or did you have to provide them yourself?
