    Did NASA Nuke Jupiter?

On September 21, NASA plunged Galileo into the planet Jupiter, in an effort to make sure that the spacecraft didn't come into contact with Europa. On October 19, a large black spot appeared on Jupiter, and no one knows what caused it. Seemingly unrelated, no?

Well, it turns out that Galileo used Plutonium-238 as a fuel source. Is it possible that this Plutonium from Galileo imploded in the dense Jovian atmosphere and caused a nuclear explosion?

The whole article on this can be read at: http://www.enterprisemission.com/NukingJupiter.html

    Thoughts?

hehe.. while the guy who wrote that article ads in a bit of math and simple physics every now and then he really does miss some important things.

while the plutonium is encased in some heat protective material its not going to stop the plutonium from melting, and once in liquid form itll destabalise the pellets and cause them to desintegate.

that site obiwan posted hits the spot.

i think something that should be larfed at more is the people who think the moon landing was a hoax. cos they really are getting sucked in hard.

It is a shame that there are a lot of "woo woo" websites full of personal conspiracy theory stuff. Sadly some of it ends up on the Underground resistance, which is upsetting, especially when everyday people need correct facts so that they can make up their own minds, and not biased paranoid views.

Poor NASA are always watched by conspiracy theorists!

Aight, aight, points taken. I'm no scientist, though I do take an interest in the world around me. I just came across the article, and the author seemed to make a good argument. I have no intentions of spreading disinformation - there's too much of that as is. I posted it here to get some opinions on the subject. In that, I suceeded.

Besides, even if it's completely coincidence, the new spot on Jupiter is interesting.

Yeah, I'm sorry man. I suppose a couple of us are astronomy geeks and we do have a tendency to jump on a lot of arguments with astronomy holier than thou action. I know that it is easy to get caught up in articles that are laced with science, but I didn't mean to get all "Oh my God that is so dumb!" attitude about it.

Sorry! It is interesting though - reading through all the websites abuot it has kind of reminded me of a lot of the cool things that hvae been going on with space probes generally and I have go knowledge out of your thread. Thanks man, didn't mean to be a numpty.

i very much appreciate your posts jerel, it opens everyones eyes to the fact that there is misinformation spreading around and to keep a keen eye on the fine line between truth and thinly veiled fantasy.

i did find it an interesting read as well as some of the other sites linked in this thread p

No worries Lata. I've been known to jump at arguments myself.
I'm glad to see that you people really do know what yer talking about, and are concerned with separating the truth from the not-so-truthful.

i think a nuclear explosion on jupiter would fail to regester visably on the surface. theres been over a thousand on earth since 1945 and you cant see any of them from space.

im sure you can infact see a nuclear explosion on earth from space (in earths orbit atleast) as the area affected by the explosion is huge and has profound effects especially on cloud formations and the mushroom itself is large enough. The size of jupiter and the size of that black patch compared to it seem to indicate a massive amount of "soot" (which could never form even tho these "conspracy theorists" say it can) and the size of the (non-critical) plutonium is far to small to even explode let alone cause a cloud that big.

i think what it all comes down to even after everyone has tabled their arguments (however scientifically dodgy) is what the hell does it matter if there was a nuke detonation on jupiter anyway and why would anyone even bother a coverup? Its no big deal and there are no adverse consequences, infact if there was a detonation on jupiter im sure a whole lot of scientists would love to observe the first time event. NASA isnt going to cover up something that would infact give them good publicity.

They're detonating Jupiter to form another star out of it so that the Europan ice surface will melt and the Europans can get out of their seas and form a civilization... :tea: :tea:

goku, i meant the after effects... eg, craters... but you get the point.

we havent been struck in a retaliatory attack by the jupiteronians yet.

and as yet, i havent seen the solar system get thrown wildly out of kilter sending us plunging into the sun...

in fact. jupiter is probably a far better place to test them than the south pacific.

Worse than that, I've encountered references to such websites while marking undergrad physics essays! Aaaaaaaaaaaargh!

I do physics research mostly, but a bit of undergraduate teaching during term time; mostly tutorials and project supervision.
