Question Advice wanted: bass traps for n00bs

    Hello.
Would one or more of you learned folk care to pass comment on picking/installing bass traps?

I have my eye on a couple, one; the standard foam type- and one a box frame stuffed with rockwool covered in breathable fabric.

My problem is that the wife won't tolerate any glueing of traps to the walls/cieling.

I was wondering about mounting the foam onto mdf then affixing the mdf onto the walls using hooks/mounts etc.. will this work ? or am i defeating the point of the foam?

With the box frame version I know there is a chain mounted on the rear and you use heavy duty picture hooks to hang it..

Im not sure wether to go for the classic vertical corner pieces floor to cieling, which then butt into a corner cube onto which a horizontal piece is attached on the wall/cieling

Or to stay satisifed with one box frame in each vertical corner and be done with it..

My spare room is small and doubles up as a studio..
    Room is L 2.9 x W 2.6 (which is the wall the monitors sit on) H 2.3m

Am i chasing a wild goose here or am I on the right track?
Any ideas welcome as its my first time*

    how's your DIY?

if you've got the time and inclination I would say do some reading up and build some yourself.. what you'll end up with will be more effective than the auralex type foam absorbers (for bass trapping specifically) imho.. It can be as simple as a basic mdf frame surrounding a rockwool slab..

well it can actually be alot simpler, in my old studio, my missus made me a number of oversized pillowcases, each one was stuffed with 2 slabs of Rockwool. For each corner I had 2 stacked vertically, no fastening at all just careful balancing. (every now and then one would come crashing down and scare the shit out of me)

For the ones that spanned the ceiling/wall corners, my genius partner sewed in 2 channels into the pillow cases which i then ran that nylon cable stuff that you hang net curtains with... Then into the walls I mounted tiny L brackets (but you could use just screw eyes) to fix them in. Same for a cloud above the mixing position.

Cheap and cheerful and the difference was very noticable even with my shit ears

Much of the midrange acoustic treatment you see is based on this rockwool/fibreglass slab approach - they just take the dirty work out for you at a cost.
