articles that hate on Jungle music from the early 1990s.

I'm aware of the Mixmag article from April 1994 (http://www.mixmag.net/words/from-the...ungle-too-ruff) that begins to reverse is previous direction.

Does anyone own or have links/scans of out-and-out vilification of the jungle scene from this period?

    thx!

    there's this one:

    http://www.nekozine.co.uk/prodigy/in...agapology.html

but I'm hoping to find more hating on jungle rather than commercialized hardcore...

a lot of sources complain about a media blackout on jungle between 1992-4, and even some negative press (which would be useful for the project).

Yeah, I used to hear alot of Dj's / Producers complain that Mixmag wouldn't give Jungle the light of day.

Not sure when this was though, seeing as they had a front cover with the headline "Summer Of Jungle" in 1994.

I just found this, from the January 1995 issue of Mixmag : http://homepages.force9.net/king1/Me...ag-Article.htm

I also seem to remember there being a big feature on Goldie's "Timeless" in another issue that I have myself - it was sometime in 1995 too.

Just found it online actually : http://www.techno.de/mixmag/interviews/goldie.html

with all these features, I'm not sure exactly when it was that Mixmag was against the sound, must have been 1992-1993... so searching out Mixmag articles from those years would be the best bet I think !

Yes I was going to mention something like that, I think hardcore was considered the bit of the 'bastard child' of dance music, I do remember reading an interview with Grooverider complaining of his music being ignored by the industry.

Of course by the time 94 had come round 'jungle' was becoming such a phenomenon that they were forced to cover it, albeit grudgingly - hence the Mixmag article. The irony is they probably wern't even interested in the 'hardcore' to be concerned that jungle was ruining it - just evidence of their contempt for the breakbeat/rave strand really. Articles after that I'd imagine were all positive - trying their hardest to catch up on what was going on... You'll have to check out the fanzines to find out what was really happening - Ravescene, Blaze, Eternity

    Yes you're exactly right there.

I had imagined this onslaught of major media press cursing the evils of jungle, tho I'm getting the impression that never happened, but instead it was a passive aggressive media blackout.

just saw this on bleep's guide to electronic music on facebook. doesn't sound overly positive about jungle!

"1994. Jungle begins to lose its popularity due to its harsh bass heavy sound and the genres association with violence, it results in Junglists turning to a subgenre of Jungle, drum 'n' bass. This new sound has much improved production, with more rhythmic clarity and the change in musical influence to jazz, ambience and hip hop. Drum 'n' Bass will later splinter off into various subgenres with each receiving varying commercial success."

Just going through some tapes - here's a quote from Fabio from the 21st July 1995, further to my comments here about him often waxing lyrical about the media on his shows:

"I dunno if you read a magazine called The Wire, but there was a very interesting article written by a one Simon Reynolds...and basically he was just talking a load of nonsense about the scene splitting and we really dont need the press coming in and telling us whats going on in this scene, and telling us what is 'black' & 'white' and... you know, he was basically trying to say about old soul tunes and whats 'black' & 'white' and it was absolute nonsense so you know, dont listen when the media try and dictate what's going on - we know what's going on... that's all I can say about that one"

    continues later in show:

"And as I was saying before... I suppose I didn't explain myself about this article, but I was really - it really did get my goat... so I'm getting on the soapbox about this one and... its hang the journalist time. But really what upset me, really, is that this music is all the same thing. You know myself, Jack Frost, Grooverider, Randall, Hype, Rap, whoever... we're all in the same boat. And this may be a mutated form, of the original jungle style but its progression and you cannot stop progression, and when people write in the press and try to say that there is a split and one side sounds more 'black' than the other and... I just think its total rubbish and I think that its highly dangerous; this article, because it can cause divides and there is no divide. It is all either jungle, breakbeat, whatever... its all got the reggae basslines and the shuffing drums... and it's all moving on... so there. So Mr. Journalist, all I can say to you mate is stick it (laughs off mic)"
