    VERY good interview!!!!

    good point this.

I notice it a lot in the dnb nights over here - there's a funk type night, or a heavy one or whatever. I end up getting booked to play a 'liquid funk' set, which is cool, but I would prefer to play a full mashup kinda thing.

I don't like the idea of endless splintering into sub-genres, would end up like house - funky house, deep house, tribal house, prog house etc etc.

Sometimes on flyers I see people trying to create a point of difference by pushing their thing as a 'combination of breaks/prog/tech/deep house' - this kinda vexes me because in my opinion a DJ is supposed to play a variety.
i kinda disagree on your interpretation here...i believe it's pretty healthy to have go in a certain direction with your night...doesn't mean you can also be into other styles, and play em out.

I can see that going in a certain direction helps a club in the way that it's easier to brand/market the club to people, so they know what they can expect. (in the same way thats how records are sold). But I think it is healthy to play variety, and this is possible as long as DJs get longer sets.

A longer set enables a DJ to be more creative and gives them chance to set the mood so that a certain tunes can be played, which taken out of context would be innapropriate/not go down well

having a certain 'ethic' for your party doesn't mean it can't be varied at all!!!
i do think it's vital to distinguish yourself from the pack one way or another...

agree. It's just that music genre is used often to indicate ethic, which then becomes restrictive

I forgot to say it was a really good interview!
