Tings what I listened to today - Statto - 12th November 2007 Cage - Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano - John Tilbury Cage used to write percussion music, but that involved taking lots of people round with lots of equipment and big venues for them all to fit in. So he got the idea to create a one-man percussion ensemble by modifying a piano, putting nuts and bolts and things in between the strings to make interesting sounds. John Tilbury is probably the top man for prepared piano, using it exclusively (I think) in his time with AMM. The Amazon link has 19 one minute clips so that gives a pretty good idea of what the music sounds like. It's nice. Tings what I listened to today - olcyrus - 12th November 2007 want a cookie? Tings what I listened to today - Statto - 12th November 2007 yes please Tings what I listened to today - MetaLX - 12th November 2007 interesting stuff statto, pretty abstract Tings what I listened to today - Statto - 12th November 2007 chris cutler - there and back again another mix of cuts from his resonance fm show "which consisted of commissioned real-time recordings made all around the world between 23.30 and midnight gmt". this is sort of cageian as well, the idea that environmental sound is musically valid. that is, if music is defined as organized sound, why not unorganized sound too? cutler himself describes this project as "an agglomeration of inadvertent sounds made haphazardly by the world and some of its inhabitants that were never meant to survive, and certainly not to be listened to repeatedly." is it then music because someone is listening to it as such? listening to sound in a concentrated way. finding patterns from random sonic events. i dunno. Tings what I listened to today - Statto - 13th November 2007 Olivier Messiaen - Catalogue d'Oiseaux (for solo piano) Books 1-3 Books 4-6 Book 7 They're attempts by the composer to describe the life of birds in their particular habitats. The birds themselves are represented by transcriptions of their own songs into musical notation, albeit slowed down and expanded (since the chromatic scale does not allow for the variety of close pitch in actual birdsong). The resulting musical language is quite unlike anything else. Listening to it for the first time, it may just sound stupid. Personally I couldn't get it at all â until I came back to it a few years later. The most accessible piece is possibly Le Courlis Cendré (the curlew) since its recognisable song at least offers a sort of hook. But my favourite is the longest (32 minutes), La Rousserole Effarvatte, which is a day in the life of the reed warbler. Incredible music.
