subvert central

subvert central has several manifestations: an internet forum for musical and subversive issues; a fledgling record label for eclectic drum and bass, jungle and associated genres; and a global movement promoting a pluralist approach to dnb in which all styles can be and are included, while encouraging experimentation and invention in the dnb tradition of sonic adventure. the forum was founded in 2002 as part of the streetbeats label domain and soon developed into an online meeting place for the dnb underground worldwide. the label and movement came about as follows...

in april 2003 a casual post about the nature of the sc forum turned into a long discussion on the state of dnb. the seeds of this debate had been growing for some time both online and off, and people now entered into it full of ideas and opinions and more than ready to express them. crucially, these opinions were not of the usual disparaging nature. instead, people took a more positive attitude expressing, first of all, a general desire for greater stylistic and rhythmic diversity in the scene, and then trying to formulate plans on how to bring this about. many were already involved as producers, djs, label managers, promoters, etc., but felt that their individual efforts were not having much effect. the aim was to expand on this work, to co-operate towards a shared objective.

co-ordinating any such campaign soon proved problematic, however. the dnb movement has never operated in any concerted way, and while the idea of a "soldier" is familiar enough, the logical extension to "army" is not. the prevailing ethos has always been to work independently, local crews running things in their own areas, co-operating, if at all, on an ad-hoc and friendly basis. nevertheless, the open and free exchange of opinions in the sc debate was constructive as individuals felt less isolated, and since then a network has developed organically to everyone's benefit, collaborating on promotion, supporting each other's events and labels, providing more opportunities for djs to play out, for live acts to perform, for producers to release their music and gain exposure.

and one concrete project did emerge. the subvert central label was set up to act as a focus for the musical aspirations expressed in the debate. volunteers came forward to do the various necessary tasks: a&r, promotion, publicity, artwork, etc., and a fund was created for individuals to contribute to the running costs. the advantages of this unique arrangement soon became apparent. with a lot of people putting in both time and money, the burden of each is reduced to a negligible level. in particular, financially it enables the label to operate with greater freedom, releasing and promoting whatever it likes without needing to worry too much about short term losses.

the first three sc releases feature producers known for their versatility. alpha omega, blue and pieter k incorporate aspects of jazz, techno, industrial rock, weird beat, and oriental music in seven disparate tracks. on the second series fracture & neptune, sileni and fanu bring yet more flavours, throwing breakbeats, hip hop, orchestral rock, traditional music, and freestyle noise into the melange. the variety of the tracks reflects both the sc philosophy and the broad base of the collective, approaching dnb from many musical directions. a mix by esb & union of the sc1-6 is available for download at http://www.planetbreakz.com/mixes/mix mirrors/subvertcentral64k.mp3.

in 2004 subvert central became independent of its streetbeats progenitors and the forum relocated to its own dedicated site. for more information or to get involved, please visit http://www.subvertcentral.com.

i dunno, it's a bit long-winded especially with the two paragraphs you devote to the story. i feel like it'd be more effective if you put your description of the label's releases, and then its unique method of operation, immediately after the comment about dnb as "sonic adventure". i really liked that phrase and it makes me curious about the actual music being made. following that with the history about the community, discussions etc would bring it full circle, especially for people who relate to all this.

also something about "SC as junglist army" nearer the front would probably make a good impact, as that's a pretty fresh concept.

yeah that one, it's very much to the point...the kinda text that tells a clear story and raises interest! Cool

the whole internet post thing is really not very relevant in a labels manifesto imo
