Not gonna happen by the looks of it.
Don't bet on it.

Ahh, almost forget this mad thread. Snaper's obsessive hunt Hahaha Brilliant. To be fair, from a current standpoint it's fairly safe to say, that the magic isn't in one or many mystical breaks, but in the way those were treated. Fx, eqing, filtering, layering, timestretching, pitch-shifting, resampling after resampling, combination of different hits, envelope shaping of ghost notes, etc. etc. also pretty excessively using self-modified breaks and treat them the same way to have multiple iterations - stuff quite a lot of people do nowadays, but which was definitely groundbreaking back then. In my opinion Mr. Parkes just had a really really good ear for sounddesign and a pretty good idea of what sounded cool and what didn't. He still has, although I just don't seem to be able to connect to his "sound style"  as much as I used to. The 90ies Photek was coined by using real instrument samples and morphing those into hi-tech versions of themselves. The last 10 years had him establish a very synthetic sounding vibe. Still top notch production, no doubt, but I prefered that gritty, ancient-japan-inspired, real life percussion patina fueled sound he fancied back then.

We used a 'Photek' break on some of the Astrophonica bits. Pretty gnarly!

Yeah, read that back then, but Charlie wouldn't reveal the secret afair Roll  (contributing to Snaper's already critical condition Lol)

I recall him saying it was a well-known break ... sort of. Just at a unusual pitch or summink.

Not willing to put oil in the fire here, though Teef I'm out.
Someone should write a dirge about this.

Can't believe I still write to this thread Grin
Anyway, this year, finally, I got my driving license.
I told my wife before my first proper trip to the kindergarten to pick up my kid that grab a few CD's from my Hi-Fi to avoid radio b*llshit...the CD at the top of the stack was Modus Operandi.
I've inserted the disc.
Don't ask why, I have not been following the scene since 2013 at all, but that album is still the definition of drum and bass for me.
Track 2, Smoke Rings, I'm done...that damn break.

Today, I opened up an empty Live project and started analysing the break again.
For sure, it is Rock Dirge, no doubt. But. There is some really clever editing and of course, some crazy EQ-ing, cause the original break isn't sound good.

Still don't know the pitch and honestly, those snares are far away from Fractures version.
You can hear a hardly compressed Rock Dirge in some Technical Itch tunes as well, now that snare is more like Fractures snare.

I've read somewhere that Photek used a Sony half rack multieffekt processor, which had an early pitch shifter like thing, maybe that is the key.
I'm downloading the entire Photek discography, so I'll sample the break and will analyse it further.
I'll post the results here to close this once and for all. Grin Grin Grin
Ok, so.
Renoise file attached, hopefully you can open it.
It includes the samples, and a possible version of the break. I've tried to use only built-in plug-ins, but, argh, have some extra on the master, I'm sure you'll have those.

Also, includes the final loop, resampled with my E6400 Ultra a few times, recorded with my Digi002.

Also, the original rock dirge files, bought the track from Beatport today to have a clean version.

The snare is still not OK, still needs EQ-ing, and the kick could be also better, but it is a really good start.
Oh, still could use some really fine editing, like delay-ing notes, "humanising" the beat a bit.
So....can't attach, 'cause it is too large.

Snaper, what about the "Hazzy 01" loop further up? What did you use to make that drum loop?

Anyway, here is my take on the break. I think I put too much reverb on it and should've layered some hi hat percussion on top.
