Is squarepusher the greatest electronic musician ever?

great pic of tomita!! some german hardcore producer did a 7" of songs all made from tomita samples.... turned out pretty nice

yeah squarepusher is good and all, but talking about squarepusher is so boring. How many keys have been typed on keyboards about how awesome he is since the internet's inception? a million? five million? 100x the number of albums he's sold? I dunno but it's a lot. If anyone wants to gush about Morton Subotnick or Tom Dissevelt though, I don't think either of them have received their due props.

Eunomius Wrote:No way is Squarepusher the greatest! Outstanding producer for sure but no where near the best. Not Aphex Twin either, the man is hyped up *far* too much. Tries to make himself out to be some sort of eccentric, super-original music god when he's really just full of shit. Love his early material, but he just can't compare to people like:

Carl Craig (my top pick)
Mark Pritchard
Juan Atkins
Klaus Schulze
DJ Shadow
old Black Dog Productions
Brian Eno

I have to give my vote to Carl Craig, not just because of the incredible production value and emotiveness of everything he's done, but because of the fact that he's capable of producing music of the highest quality in so many 'genres', including techno, house, ambient, breakbeat, hip-hop, space-jazz, soul, et al

youre a typical case of know-it-all

just to let you know people think different -> i'd never compare carl craig, juan atkins and mark pritchard with either of squarepusher and aphex twin...sp and afx are light years ahead of those aforementioned imo

and you're saying afx is really just full of shit? how could you possibly state anything more ridiculous?

Roll
I would have to say with out that trinity(afx square and plug) I wouldnt have gotten into jungle in the first place...but try to learn how to mix with
that and youll have an anyurizm...I really like I wish you could talk that song makes me cry...#1 on burnin tree is some of the funk from space...the ultravisitor is really beautful but the drums need to be louder...he was going for a lve band sound I guess...but I heard a quote from him that was all" in thirty years your grand kids are going to dig up my records and play them and realize I was the greatest musical genious of my generation" a little self absorbed but fuck it I'll take it
biggieballs Wrote:but I heard a quote from him that was all" in thirty years your grand kids are going to dig up my records and play them and realize I was the greatest musical genious of my generation" a little self absorbed but fuck it I'll take it

where did you hear that? is the source valid? i highly doubt squarepusher would say anything that stupid, from what ive read of his interviews (ive read maybe a little less than 10 interviews) he's really intelligent and down to earth reasonable guy

i dont believe that quote to be honest, im interested in seeing whether the claim can be validated Wink

A controversial point I know......

but I refer you to track 2 & 3 on the Smogface EP. Come on now... what the fuck is that all about???? Baffled
I love that story about Squarepusher getting complaints about the noise from his neighbours....

They got some court injunction or something meaning he couldn't make noise after midnight, so he bought a massive fuck off gong and put it by the wall, and at 11:59 each night he would PUNG it proper hard then go and work on headphones while the gong rang on for 15 minutes or so Rofl

It could be a bullshit story, but I wouldn't put it past him Hahaha

yes "hard normal daddy" is such a beautifull album.... must be on of my most played at the moment( apart from my daily reggae intake Wink )
But still have to get to know more of his stuff.... but that album ..... one of those "what to rescue from your house, if on fire, type a thing" Baffled
What i'm saying ..... i realy love that album!!! Comes with "axis bold as love",
oh well gettin in another topic here... Wink one stop
Eunomius Wrote:DJ Shadow

ok, if we are talking about being over rated... the DJ Shadow steals the show. Yeah sure he found some nice samples, but give those samples to RJD2 and then see what happens!!!!

im sorry, i really dont know how you can compare DJ Shadow to anyone else mentioned in this thread.

i dont dislike his music, but its never made me go 'wow'.

i'd show him how to cut up a fucking breakbeat!

i havent heard those but i assume that's something i'd take as a laugh

afx has told he likes to make / play music that pisses people off, i like that attitude! Grin

also humour in music is way too underrated...aphex and squarepusher are dons in that respect Wink

@ fracture:

you dont rate endtroducing at all?

I was going to respond to that DJ Shadow comment, but didn't want to cause offense........ Fracture doesn't have that problem (and he saved me saying 'piss off Shadow').

Well if he wants to piss people off... then fine (i don't understand it, but fine)..... the Smogface EP cost me Money, and paired with the fact that the three track EP contains one 'Music' track and two tracks of total fucking non-sense, pissed me off. Tracks 2 & 3 only serve to hurt your ears.

I wish I could make money out of the digital feedback noises my computer makes when it crashes.

well i prefer being wary with artists like squarepusher and aphex cos they really can come up with absolutely anything

actually i got interested, im now looking for audio of the smogface ep online...ill come up later and tell you my view of it if i can find it Grin

id like to point out that definitions 'music' and 'nonsense' arent mutually exclusive, it depends very much on the context / your viewpoint

actually there's this noise track i really really dig by aphex called 'aphex airlines', most people would probably call it noise / nonsense but i really appreciate the track, it's really inspirational (a bit heavy on your ears though Grin)

"pushing the edge of absolute nonsense" as squarepusher said in an interview, i like that definition
dak Wrote:id like to point out that definitions 'music' and 'nonsense' arent mutually exclusive, it depends very much on the context / your viewpoint

I agree, and if after listening to the tracks in question, you find that you like them.... then fair enough. I just like my ears... and I'm already goin deaf. :P

hehe i see your point. it's just when listening to 'aphex airlines' for instance i find it very humorous and inspiring, it sounds like a bunch of retards in a fantasy airline (you can imagine an aphex type completely absurd situation with all kinds of weirdos going on there hehe)

i dig those visions, and that's the point for me. i like music that makes me think and see... also the ringing sounds are really painful to ears but after listening to that track put on some real smooth ambient (some thomas köner or brian eno for instance) and itll sound like heaven, the contrast between the music is really big and that really intensifies the experience, marvellous Wink
I've heard the things dgoHn is on about, and really dak - it's just shit. Takes the piss, really it does.

i need to hear it with my own ears to evaluate it, i tend not to trust people's opinions when it comes to music Wink i might come up with a context that makes the music good Grin
'music' is an extremely loose term when applied to this....

btw dak, while you are here - your stuff is the dog's bollocks Falcon

love it, everything i have heard man. lovely stuff Applause

my definition of music is just 'sound aesthetics' :d i think it leaves enough freedom to all people

many people think of 'musical' music (what a dumb definition) as sound material that has strong melodic content but i think it's way too strict and oversimplifying, all elements of sound are parameters of 'music', why would any one of them be more important than the others in order for the music to be 'musical'?

ahh shit im argumenting to myself again lol excuse me

.
.
.

hmm i didnt know you had even heard my stuff...well im glad you dig it! :d

what stuff you heard btw, the old crap d&b, teh minimal techno or the ambient texture material?

ez Wink
i am not obsessive about the melodic part, or the rhythmic part - but it needs to have some semblance of one or the other to be music in my opinion..... otherwise i would categorise it as i dunno, sonic art or something.

i have heard two or three sounscape bits (my fave) and one extremely minimal dnb thing as i recall. heard them on esb and john doe's shows...... really enjoyed them all. Xyxthumbs

Squarepusher is the best in my opinion but the works of AFX are amazing too.
Although I like Tom's music even more.

Anyone knows these from Squarepusher: Tom Jenkinson's Bubble and Squeak?

Also much respect to Amon Tobin and DJ Shadow but it's a different kind of music.

For electronics I should say:
1. Square Tommy
2. Animals On Wheels
3. Luke Vibert (for the Plug releases)
4. AFX
the few animals on wheels pieces i have heard are ber-zonkers Falcon
