FUNK

So... what do funk fans on here REALLY like about original 60s/70s funk? I've asked Dev Paradox about this before too and I was never really happy with the answer, to be honest!

Is it simply the few seconds of raw break?

Cos let's face it, the rest of it is no more than happy-clappy, non-cerebral, shake-yer-ass, music-made-for-dancing. Isn't it?

An open break is the bit that really gets me going, but it's just the raw, unashamed in your faceness that really gets me going. Not a fan of the more rhythmically conservative later stuff, I'm more about the late 60s / early 70s stuff, just soooooooo much rawer than all that P Funk / Bootsy Collins esque stuff.........

Do us a CD, Pez Wink

Funk has always remained a mystery to me.... maybe I just don't know enough about it though!
The raw energy for the most part. Nothing to do with a few seconds of clear break at all.
my favourite stuff is anything by the Meters. blues, funk and a dash of madness.

but my knowledge of 60s 70s funk isnt great. Baffled

Hahaha Sorry, posted this just before you came back over there!

I'LL FIGHT YA ON 2 FRONTS YA BASTARD!
The pure badassmofo-ness in the grooves. Not true of all of it though - it isn't the happy clappy stuff I really go for, apart from Gimme Some More Lovesmilie.

Examples of BAD TO THE BONE funk:

JB - Can't Stand It 76 - so dirty - nothing happy clappy about it at all.
JB - Stone To The Bone
Sharon Jones - Got To Be The Way It Is
Sharon Jones - Got A Thing On My Mind
Sharon Jones - Ain't It Hard
(okay Sharon Jones is very recent but it is in the same vein)

The Meters - Tippi Toes Lovesmilie
The Meters - Same Old Thing (TUNE! Check the change ups and different sections)

+ Soooooo many more that aren't 'happy clappy good time music'.

Has anyone heard 'Unhooked Generation' by Freda Payne?

A bit happy Oops but it is sing-a-long badness! Cool

I think there is a difference between intentionally making music that makes people dance and just expressing your self through the medium of music...

... whether something is or isn't funk (you/vous fucking decide).. it does not necessarsesarily mean that the intention to make people dance was part of it's conception.

:P
What Champion Of Funk will knock me up a quick compo of some of these golden funk moments? C'mon y'all muthafukkaz - help me Get Down!!!!! Cool

*confused*

I don't understand - are you suggesting that making music in order to make people dance... is somehow inferior to making music for any other reason?

He's saying the same thing as I am Naphta.

If it isn't what is IN YOUR HEART AND SOUL, it's inferior.

Ahh, fair play to ya Pez! And if I can ever listen to music at work, I'll check it out!
the rawness.

the mixdowns are so fucking rugged. the recordings have so much character, you can almost smell the grits and gravey.
