how would you do this?

28 Replies, 1484 Views

so i had some really great shit fall into my lap. i got offered my own nite (a saturday nite no less) to make my own-i would be taking over from a very popular techno nite and turning it into a hopefully popular drum & bass nite. i have designs to eventually feature some of the people on this board who i respect when this gets of the ground, so there is a vision.

needless, i went in asking for a gig and they gave me a whole nite. i've never done this before so this is somewhat new and pretty fightening to me. so can i get some sage advice from you guys? can one man do this w/o a crew for support? of course i'd be responsible for booking, promoting, and a great deal of logistical aspects as well.

we run Beat Jam so if theres any help you need just ask.

good luck our seanie.
no bother to ya seanie mack...has the venue got a decent soundsystem n decks?

u have the contacts...nae problemo...people are always willing to drop science

whos gonna do ur flyers, posters n advertising?

it can be done on ur own but its always good to have backup that u can trust especially if you want to go away for a weekend or whatever!
totally, i agree with B

you need a little crew.
If you need flyers I'd be happy to help out. I do the flyers for Bassbin and NuKillaKru in Ireland. Where are you based... I'd love a gig once you are up and running.

I highly recommend stack's flyers both innovative & imaginative plus they make excellent roach material!! Wink
decks & mixer are top flite-no issue there. they're getting a new sound setup as the outgoing guys are taking the rig. so that has to be situated.

a friend of mine will do graphix gratis so this helps a lot. thinking of sticking to spamming (as much as i hate getting it meself) as it would be more direct, less wasteful & then i can concentrate on hitting the other dnb nites with flyers and keep costs down. the club covers press in the papers.

yeh-assistance is going to be big as i need a backup. some stuff i need to situate with the club owner (paying other people on the bill)-she seems pretty on the level so i don't think it'll be a big problem.

so am i missing anything else?

either get full control of the door takings or a flat rate!
you need some back up though...getting the artists in, providing places to stay...promoting the night (flyering, postering, etc.), residents....I'd chip in in any departement you like...stacks is a good idea for flyers, I'd say!
Is no one seeing the obvious here?

FREEFORM FRANCHISE!!!

Christ...wait...now that I've said it, duh, it's so painfully obvious!!! Not "Frestyle" but FREEFORM!!! Oktal always did talk about making it a franchise and I was in talks with the Sublife guys here a few years ago about doing a Freeform internet show and perhaps there's hope yet to get a Freeform irregular night here...

FRANCHISE, FRANCHISE, FRANCHISE!!

Seanie, you're in pole position!

No pressure!
Naphta has written some stuff about this (and anything else you can think of) before but one thing he said stuck with me. Pay everyone something, no matter how small a fee.. that way you aren't beholden to anyone else and no one can demand returned favours etc. It seems a bit mercenary an attitude but pretty soon the 'guest list for me and my 8 mates' will begin to grate.

they run percentage off the till and no door which bodes well for getting people in, but not necessarily for making money. tho not a money making venture, i can't really afford to do it for nothing either!

and likewise, i think it's most important to build a good model for continuing relationships amongst talent, the club and myself. and i know it's not easy being a dj when you have to lug yer shit around for $50-it doesn't seem worth it! i'm concerned about getting them payed

so pieter-freeform? isn't that what tap came out with when nigel left the group?!?

alas, in chicago. you guys are mad supportive so it's shite that i'm not across the pond! thanx for your advice bigtime stacks. the nextime i'm in brighton i'll buy a pint or three! but i think (again) the great thing about this board is that it's given me a renewed perspective as to what one can feature & that there are different ways of creating a system and that there is support for progressive beats.

i'm gonna book some of you bastards yet!

You really want to talk to Naphta about this shit - he along with Rohan, probably has the most experience in this area of anyone I know. Though, I'm sure Blue and the rest of the SB lads have some good advice too.

paying everyone no matter how little is important. And be sure to be frank, honest and fair...Take into account the size of the venue, the amount of people in attendance, how much you front on sound, light, drinks and the like. That will give people a fair idea of what money comes in and what goes out...usually my nights end up turning in a little loss, but when you see people brocking out to the sound you yourself dig best that makes up for a whole lot!

That said, sometimes running a night and have all the pieces of the puzzle fit beofre th night will have you running to the looney bin!! :zombie
make your event the place to be, ya!

go on my schun!!!!!!!!!!!
We have someone on the door taking peoples details ie mobile and e mail and then prior to the next night we send details of up and coming events. A text works real well because people arent expecting that and you know how so many people are in their phones all the time.

You also wanna think about ways of keeping the punters coming back too. Give out VIP passes maybe? ( we charge on the door £4 but give some women free entry to the next events, sounds abit whatever but you get nice women going there and the men will follow). Giving one or two to a large group will mean the chances are they will all come next time?

Drinks promotions too, Speak to the club. Problem there is if the club is making most of its money on the drinks then theymay not be so willing.

What also works well for us is nearly all of us have SB t-shirts so it looks quite professional when you walk in. maybe a longer term plan though.

Hope some of that helps mate.
