you know, the slooow stuff...

albums i've downloaded and enjoyed so far :

boris - amplifier worship
electric wizard - dopethrone (my favourite, together with the boris)
jesu - st (not a fan of the vocals)
ocean chief - odin sessions
yob - the unreal never lived
esoteric - the pernicious enigma (very nice music spoiled by cookiemonster vocals)
thorr's hammer - dommedagsnatt (again, silly grunting Roll)
sleep - dopesmoker
clotted symmetric sexual organ - are you excrements? (probably more grindcore-krautrock, but great)

i like both the more traditional slowed down black sabbath riffs and the more experimental drone stuff, as long as it has a bit of variety.
i've read good things about sunno))), but the few bits i heard almost put me to sleep. what's their best album ?
never heard sunno, but electric wizard are totally awesome.......

how about some Iron Monkey....they never go a miss with me........

such a shame the vocalist is no more......"ruined by idiots" is such a fine album..........Bad year live........

Amazing!
:d

all electric wizard records are excellent Yes

* Wrote:thorr's hammer - dommedagsnatt (again, silly grunting Roll)

that record holds one of the best vocal performances (within metal that is) i've ever heard Icon_eek oh well

what type of stuff would you prefer: the guitar & bass with some effects stuff (grimmrobe demos and 00 void), the more noise-influenced ambient (flight of the behemoth, not my fave btw) or the less noisy ambient stuff (white1 and white2)?

other bands:

reverend bizarre (really good, black sabbath/st vitus type of rocking doom goodness. clean vocals)

thergothon - a stream from the heavens (a classic in the ridiculously slow "funeral doom genre", the mixdown on this record is rather odd and thus difficult to get into plus there's some guttural vocals there, but i'd say it's worth a try)

skepticism (another defining band of the funeral stuff, recommended aswell)

unholy (yet another classic in finnish really slow doom)

you've heard of melvins and orange goblin already right? Smile

grand magus - everything excluding their latest which afaik is closer to power metal (crusty, epic and surprisingly rather merry rocking classic type of doom)

moss (extremely ugly and noisy sludge. check out their cover of swans' cop)

bunkur (slightly in the same league as moss, perhaps a bit more inaccessible)

edit: whoops, forgot to mention earth. the definitive artist of all droney stuff.

how do you tell good grunting from bad grunting ? Smile
the female vocal is nice, admittedly.

i don't know. i have a live recording consisting of 20 minutes of guitar drone, which is nice enough, but i'd prefer something a bit more lively.

while we are on the subject of metal :

does it make sense to investigate black metal further if i was pretty underwhelmed by emperor's "in the nightside eclipse" and burzum's "filosofem" ?

The female vocal is nice, admittedly.

she performs the grunting aswell. not that either of the vocals weren't impressive on their own!

the word lively does not incorporate with drone doom Smile i dare you to try to use it as background music.

i think i have a clue of your taste in music, so i would say no. i understand well how some simply can't digest emperor's synth-drenched roller coaster mayhem, but i'd dare to say that burzum's metal records are so brilliant that those who don't appreciate them can't listen to music with an open, unsuspecting mind (supposing that they like sinister music that is). THAT is why teens who just found burzum and ppl who have been listening it for 10 years now are still equally fond of it. of course many are appealed by varg vikernes' acts and statements, but there's just so much more to it that varg vikernes as a person is completely irrelevant to burzum.
this is definitely not meant as a cuss or a trivial elitist statement but is a humble expression how i personally feel Smile

you could always give ulver's bergtatt a shot though. it's a one of a kind record (even though most of the time it's fast blastbeats and shrieked vocals with an unpleasant - but completely controlled - production). if nothing else, i think you'd get at least something out of the first track. ulver's second lp, kveldssanger is also worth trying if you happen to like haunting medieval folk.
Monster Magnet.

wicked aussie stoner shits.

fucken funny as too.
grief
esoteric
evoken

oops, you already mentioned esoteric. "metamorphogenesis" is fucking awesome though.

if you wanna try some weird doomy stuff check out bethlehem - dictus te necare and S.U.I.Z.I.D. - SUIZID is rad but the vocals are a bit hard to get used to.
sleep - Jerusalem.

they evolved into another band with even more balls i've heard, but haven't heard their record- they're called 'high on fire' now
