i have not really kept up on them since Iaora Tahiti.
can you suggest which newer ones to start with? if
they have kept the quality i would like to purchase
them all.

quite the quality pair.
had completly forgotten about mouse on mars Smile used to be well into them

might have to dig out some albums, cheers for the reminder
are you seriously 15?

you seem to really have broad tastes for someone of that age. Xyxthumbs

currently listening to some gabba action off vulvaland
big mom fan here. Wave

take a look at their label sonig, which distributes all their releases and lots of fine music by artists they like.

the first two albums, vulvaland and iaora tahiti, are, by their own admittance, a bit underdeveloped.

their first release in their mature style is autoditacker in 1997, which is like very dense, electronic krautrock and probably exemplies their sound best.

in the same year they released instrumentals, which is a bit more subdued and dark, it's my favourite record by them.

in 1998 they put out glam, a rejected soundtrack for a film project with tony danza (Icon_eek). it's an atypically quiet, moody ambient record and another one of my favourites.
beautiful cover too.

in 2000 came niun niggung, which basically pushes the sound of autoditacker farther by using more digital processing and adding live instrumentation.

idiology (2001) and radical connector (2004) are a change of direction for mom :
both go more into a weird dance/rnb direction and make heavy use of the processed vocals of drummer dodo nkishi. idiology adds more live instruments, while radical connector includes female vocals by sonig artist niobe.

this year they put out a live record, live 04, which rocks.

the rost pocks compilation from 2003 collects most of their singles, among them the essential cache coeur naif ep with laetitia sadier, which is like the missing link between classic mom and their current sound.

another higly recommended record is uni umit, by jan werner's side project lithops. it's like a looser, moodier lo-fi mom, and one of my favourite records ever. i can't understand why it is so widely ignored, it is one of the best electronic records of the 90ies.

mom also put out a book last year, which i posted about in the currently reading thread.

btw, here's a cool sound on sound interview with jan werner :

nice informative post *. i do like the underdeveloped charm of their first 2
lp's. in most cases i find it is during the first few lp's that most acts do some of
their best works. in any case it is nice to know i can get many of the newer
titles on the cheap c/o thrill jockey.
whats anyones fave MoM tune then? Smile
funny that i have been scanning the thill jockey site over
the weekend for cheaper priced domestic pressings of
some MoM releases and now the page have had a major
overhaul. soundfiles for most every thrill jockey is now
found in their catalogue as well as as full lp mp3 d/l's.
just too bad i am still a materialistic collector whom likes
to hold a record in his hands (when available) or at the
very least a cd version. mind you i find it funny that a
label that is not very electronically minded overall in their
content has their shit together when it comes to making
their releases easily accesible for those whom like it
in digital format. many d&b labels with years worth of
material could learn alot from these cats.

then again, even in the early 90's when our shop dealt
direct with touch & go and all the umbrella of labels they
had their shit together. wow

would you believe i saw this thread last year and i'm only finally getting around to reading it now ?!!

dwarde78 Wrote:whats anyones fave MoM tune then? Smile

a draw between "actionist respoke", "bib" and "schunkel"

.. there was one b-side I recall loving very much. no idea what the name was though... it came out as first single to "autoditacker" and that b-side was a sort of "offbeat horns techno tune". ermm..
listened through vulvaland tonight
