Deep deep tunes.
What a title!
Brilliant release. 'Naked' is the one for me, definitely Grin

Beautiful intro, and that bassline is just cavernous...
What, like a cave, that's nervous?

blood on my hands
I'm going to just talk some bollocks here, don't mind me:

I've only really heard the first tune, the bongos + pad + bass + voice one (Blood On My Hands, right?), and a superb piece of music it is. But I dunno why it's specifically dubstep (although perhaps the rest of the EP is more so) - it's kind of just music really innit? Not dissimilar to millions of things from all sorts of styles. It could be by almost anyone in any genre. Why does it come under that 'banner'? Baffled

Not trying to cause trouble Teef , just curious. I know dubstep is still in a semi-embryonic state and that, but if it's that vaguely defined then even I have done dubstep tunes yeeears ago Baffled

I wouldn't mention this really except that when listening to it at his gaff, kidkut said to me that this was the last release on whatever label it is, and that they were stopping it as they felt they were going too dubstep.

I dunno, I just want a copy of that tune and will happily pay someone for it Grin

Nail on the head Macc. It IS just music. As ever the tortuous and needless definition of a genre is threatening to get in the way of just enjoying good music for what it is. good fucking music.

To be honest I think there are alot of shit writers/journos/opinionheads who want to use Dubstep as a springboard for their 'intellectual' expertise. To them Dubstep is something that is theirs, and which they can greedily lay claim to understanding on a more fundamental level than other people. In actuality all they do is restrict the music to that which is easily pigeonholed and rammed ineloquently into a dictionary definition.

DMZ was ace. Grin
Hats off to Kode 9, mala and loefah.

Are there many such tunes like that about? Do people dance to them?

Just out of interest Smile

I had that clip on loop for about 15 minutes earlier. Thank goodness it was as good as I recalled.

It would appear that way. Which is what hindered me from inititally. Now i'm just into the tunes and sharing the odd opinion here and there.

So much bollocks comes with new found music in this country. You get the obligatory stigma attached to it, then your over the top analysis, then debate/discussion as to why it deserves credit and recognition, and finally the the comparisons with alternative artforms (drum n bass in this instance - although not actually in this instance Teef )

So yeah, I agree.

Yes. YOu'd be surprised what people dance to at DMZ. Anything and everything. One track Mala played was just like a military snare pattern with a sub bass. And fuck me if it didn't actually work really well. I may have imagined it but i remember it droppping and my head taking some time to catch up to what was going on. Hahaha Kode 9 even dropped a Prince track. Icon_eek

Pinch - Qaawaali (sp?) is nize in the same kind of way but i think you'll need benUFO, logos or someone who really knows their stuff to pointyou towards similar stoof.

and lorrris, yaman. Grin

For me, dubstep refers more to a movement than a specific, defineable style...there is definately a core sound (or a number of them), but even the central players (probably most notably Mala of digital mystikz) move a substantial distance from that, regularly. Apparently, amusingly enough, when DMZ started producing this kind of stuff back in day, they referred to it as '138 shit'... indicative, i think of their approach (although obviously as time has passed they've mostly developed more distinct styles)

I think shackleton is clearly a fair distance from the 'mainstream' as it were, but it all depends on perception. There are many artists who are similarly, far from the centre, but are perceived as central by those who follow it (Distance and Pinch, for example). Even Kode9, who was central to its evolution to the movement's modern state, makes music which sounds nothing like anyone else on the scene. Strangely, they seem to both define and subvert the style simultaneously.

My thought, i suppose, is that labels (not the record variety!) are stupid, and shouldnt be the cause of either uncritical love for all within a definition, but nor rejection of all within on the basis of its characterisation. There's nothing wrong with calling it dubstep, but anyone who characterises 'dubstep' as anything too slender is in my opinion misguided
in terms of similar material, as you'd expect given what ive said above, there is nothing of entirely similar stuff banging around, but i would suggest checking the lists i posted here...

http://www.subvertcentral.com/forum/view...li&t=28893

lots of similar stuff in terms of the whole defining yet subverting thing, referenced from a different tune, but probably appropriate.

I'd really recommend checking out the new DMZ ( http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=21344 )...remix is the club banger as it were, but the original is deep as you like, vibes...

also the soul jazz digital mystikz ones are heavy, very different tip, but sick tunes

elgato Wrote:'138 shit'... indicative, i think of their approach

138 as in, the bpm?

That's the approach I'd love to be able to have to dnb... Tempo is it, all else is completely free. But dnb is now so entrenched in 'tradition' (that is, there's very strict limits largely defined by the average dnb dancefloor) that it's unlikely.

I wonder how long people can keep that up, the openness. Either way, labels or no lavels, it's just a good piece of music. I should check the rest of the EP really.
