The Fear - Blogariddims 20/Shwantology : 3

Droid Wrote:Do a search for ambient mixes and you’ll find about a million and a half links - of course not all go to DJ mixes, but it’s surprising to see just how many sets are out there. Unfortunately (with the odd exception) they're mostly insipid 'chillout' mixes, conforming to the Cafe del Mar Ibiza sunset post-rave definition of ambient - all soft sounds and rounded corners, texturally deficient, with no dissonance, darkness or dirt to unsettle the comedowns of their intended audience. This is 'Big chill' mixing with no contrasts, just a restricted range of complimentary colours - in many cases a sickly palette of pastels perfectly suited for soporific consumption. Given the general level of quality on display it's no surprise that many of the best ambient sets come from people who aren’t bound by these ludicrously narrow genre definitions - non-DJs such as Blogariddims contributors Tim Rambler or Soundslike. In fact one of the main motivators for this entire project was the seemingly utter lack of ambient mixes with any kind of edge or bite to them...

Grevious Angel - Blogariddims 21 / Fusion Dub

Grevious Angel Wrote:This time last year I was waaaaay deep into a series of pilgrimages deep into dubstep, a process that is still ongoing, though not as spiritually all-encompassing as it was. And part of my response to the influx of dubstep vibrations that have been flowing into me since 2005 has been a re-connection with deep dub sounds of… Miles Davis. My connection with Miles has always crossed over with dub, electronics and industrial. I got heavily into Miles, especially the electric period but also the Gil Evans orchestral period, at the same time as I got into Cabaret Voltaire – when I was 13, almost 14. It was only a year or so later that I realised how much of an influence he was on Richard Kirk and Stephen Malinder; all I knew was that the sonics and spaces of 2 X 45 were identical to On the Corner. In the same way as the threads connecting from the Cabs to acid to ardkore and thence to dubstep are obvious, for me, the thematic connection from Miles to dubstep is also clear, but it’s more a matter of influence than direct connection...

Episode 22. A very nicely thought out set from musicologist and classical/contemporary maestro Tim Rambler.

Blogariddims 22 / Disintegrations

The Rambler Wrote:Listening to Kwaidan on a Tokyo-bound train last December was where this mix started. There are strange links between Japanese traditional music and the European avant-garde, and I began sketching out a preliminary tracklist for a mix that would draw out some of these connections. Ultimately the most important connection is a particular sense of time: as the modern musical movement abandoned traditional notions of harmony, melody and rhythm, so the experience of time as something non-linear, cyclical and complex drew closer to some Asian concepts. Composers intermittently made such connections explicit through the 20th century by drawing heavily on Japanese and other oriental inspirations (Messiaen, Cage), but their discoveries had ramifications for the music of others who were not so heavily engaged with Eastern philosophies. The multi-faceted patterns of Boulez’s Third Piano Sonata are one example; the almost complete abandonment of pitch, harmony and rhythm for a purely sonic organisation that exists purely in the moment as exhibited by Penderecki’s sonoristic music is another.

Naphta - Blogariddims 18/Rough

Naphta Wrote:1993, as anyone who knows their history of hardcore music will tell you, was a prime year for breakbeat music in the UK. A mix of Shut Up N Dance-inspired breakbeat and sample-heavy rave was elbowing its influence onto the dancefloor and the resulting mash-up of hiphop beats, reggae subs and rave melodies created what, all things considered, has to really be marked out as drum and bass music’s finest hour to date…

Often less sensible of dance music ‘norms’ in terms of its arrangement, hardcore and early Jungle does weird shit all the time – just when you’re getting comfortable, it drop-kicks your ass into some new position. A bastard to mix (as you’ll hear in one or two places), the tunes nonetheless kick like a mule - even by comparison with Jungle in a 94/95 style. The slower tempo (than Jungle and later drum n bass) allowed the pounding kick-drums to occupy more space in the mix (reminds me of early Public Enemy in that respect – by comparison with the later snare-dominated g-funk and RnB styles that became prevalent in hiphop…)...

Nine of the 22 tracks in this mix come from either Shackleton, kode9 or Mala, each of whom, I’ve often said, is more like a genre unto himself than a representative of any broader style or collectivity.
