Very nice. Sicknote, "Lost Deep in The Hard Drive" lp, recommended.

Juju - Redder Than Red [9th Wonder label] An interesting breaks and bleeps tune, sounding like a mixture of Amit & Nucleus & Paradox. This could make it drumfunk, in all, but to me it's closer to Decoder and Technical Itch in the early days than plenty of the tunes out there in the last five years, also helped by its half-time nomenclature. Technical Itch - Focused [Diagnostics LP, 1999] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46zH64q4rH4 Amazing tune. Probably one of my faves ever from Mark Caro. Also one of my introductions to his music on the internet archives made light of legally. "Focused" is seven minutes of doom glitch dnb, heavy techno nastiness with mean percussive artillery. It's even nastier sounding than his Current Value nosebleed stuff - real subtlety, like a rattlesnake following your path and dropping you down a trench of vipers.
^^ I've never heard that Juju tune before. Good stuff, and yes I agree on the early Decoder-ish inference. I haven't heard "Focused" in a long time. I still have the "Diagnostics" cd kickin around somewhere. It has been years. But yeah, Current Value.. as in the mon Tim Eliot? uh.. Different dude.
Catching up on more recent Tech Itch jams. "RESIST:ED SIX" compilation is sexy. "RESIST:ED FIVE" ain't too bad either. https://brakken.techitch.com/album/tx-lp https://store.techitch.com/album/resist-ed-six https://store.techitch.com/album/resist-ed-five
Years back (.. it seems like a long time ago to me), when crossbreed was the new thing, I didn't necessarily listen to much of it, although I do recall the early stuff. My attentions were elsewhere, and maybe more specifically focused, rather than geeking out over a hybrid subgenre. If I search around at any given time, I do like a lot of crossbreed now if I put my attentions to it on the odd occasions. Every now and then, you might hear a slightly more clearer, techstep frame to a tune, as apposed to the overt, industrial hardcore techno kick. Techstep in spirit - subjective I know - or adjacent, obviously I've never been one to dismiss influences that go beyond the root of a sound.
eRRe from Spain. I like some of the tunes.

Something you might hear on Exit today, or similar labels, raw, noisy, electro style sounds in a minimal dnb style, melodic atmos. Its a good find. I was a brief fan of Dj Ron's Picasso label back then, hence my stumbling into Fresh's work, pre-Bad Company et all. . props to I-Witness DnB youtube channel for posting "Retrostatic". imo this is the best early Fresh tune. Dance y'all!
^^ I love the grungey, stark, cold production. The bass womps in the background, melodies, the builds & movement in the high hat details. Half time tempos before half time? Electro, techno industrial funk.. I still love the tune. Pitched down would sound great as well.
Another local, Front Line Assembly related, industrial dnb influenced release via Vancouver, BC's Decree.
Decree, "Moment of Silence" lp, 2004. Featuring Chris Petersen (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) & friends. Front Line Assembly & all related projects have made so much music from different production eras since the 80's, I like that they've always kept an ear to everything & anything going on at any given time. A literal, generational diary of west coast, Canadian electronics. It was always seemingly, extremely rare that FLA & Skinny Puppy to even play local shows back in the day, yet the amount of music released has been so vast. Elusives. FLA & all relatted projects have never been a stagnant EBM industrial machine, that's for sure. Decree are great, no matter the release. Recommended. https://decree.bandcamp.com/album/moment-of-silence

This is funky.
I listened to "Exorcise the Demons" for the first time in a long bit today. The production largely sounds current for sure. I was trying to wrap my head around the production techniques of the time, given the cohesion and timeless details, in retrospect, as a listen in 2022, the album definitely holds up, and is all well done. Bravo! IMO, when you take away the context of buying and / or enjoying music for djing purposes, you often never actually get into the minute details as much as you should, specifically via full length albums. I tend to appreciate selections more now in retrospect, rediscovering much of the craft of tune. I forgot the lp was released in 1999, I tend to think of Source Direct as a mid-90s thing per se, even tho I still own most of my initial SD / Hokusai purchases from those years, I forget what the release timelines were building up to the album release. Feels like a blur to me now. I get a craving to hear the tunes entirely pitched down as I post, just for the trip of it all.
"Concealed Identity" is still a favorite, and "Technical Warfare" got a couple rewinds - that tune is a dark, sinister, sampling masterpiece. Thoroughly enjoyed, 23 years on. Still music that makes you think. Good stuff. |
