the thing i imagine happened is that listeners stuck the first few tunes on, thought yep, nice, then the nubian minds tunes came on and suddenly lost interest in hearing the rest.

Now, I'm not dissing nubian minds, but those tunes are definitely of an acquired taste, even more so than drum and bass and 24-minute soundscape epics are...
you got past the Atomhead then? Smile

I think that with this release you need to have a fairly broad musical taste

perhaps for some there is not one tune that immediately tempts people to buy it, perhaps it is too varied for some?

SC3 definitely grows on you the more times you listen to it, it is one to sit back and listen to.

mp3 and vinyl would be good, though personally istill prefer it on vinyl
this raises a some interesting questions.. Chin

you've got to look at the people that are actually have going to have listened to this.. maybe what 1000 people? because for me, with this product, that is more important in terms of marketing and sales than pricing options and packaging, it comes down to your position in the market as i have said before, but i don't necessarily think you should try to change this position because a) the selection of music is purposefully abstract b) i don't have any ideas for how you could reposition yourself without compromising on other things. (eg, selling mp3s would be a compromise on your initial intentions)

most of the dnb people who will have actually listened will have their own agenda, most of them trying to sell for themselves (a wider problem in dnb at the moment?). if you have got maybe 100 people from other/non dnb forums you have advertised on to listen to it (little detroit, some others?), lots of them people will probably have lost interest or have little interest in drum and bass years ago so they might instantly dismiss it. none of the music on offer here is part of of a new movement eg. no dubstep. that shouldn't matter in an ideal world because it doesn't effect the end product coming out of the headphones, but hey..

as for the tunes, i can appreciate most of them (that goes for all of the volumes so far), imo - the macc tunes are jazzy drum and bass at its finest, the nubian minds/blue tunes are on another level, the formication tunes fit in well with a lot of the music i have been listening to recently.

i don't buy much vinyl at the moment because i'm totally skint, if i had a job i could probably buy my entire vinyl collection in a couple of months. but i'm going to buy it eventually because i like with what you are attempting to do here on sc and i like the music.

vote - i'm going to buy it, stfu already Lol

Statto Wrote:As for the randomness of the tunes on SC3, well yes, they are rather random. That's the point really. SC is not a dnb forum. People like all sorts of stuff. So SC3 branches out a bit to reflect wider interests, though still with four out of six sides coming from our producers (Trax, Macc, AO, Fanu).
It is a dnb forum, though. People here have broader tastes than just listening to dnb, true, but dnb is the one thing that pretty much everyone here likes... it's also probably what people think of when you mention "the cause": supporting non-mainstream dnb. I mean, it's the only thing that people actually bother to say that they're not interested in for starters. When was the last time someone felt the need to start a thread about how they're bored with Hindustani classical music or scandinavian free folk?

droid Wrote:And yes, the chocolate analogy is wrong. What would be more apt is to say that you have 2 products:

1) Chocolate bar at 50p
2) Chocolate bar plus free aniseed balls at 50p

The aniseed balls might be free, but as most chocolate lovers don't like aniseed balls, they will be more likely just to buy the chocolate alone... in this case Id rather get more aniseed balls and no chocolate!
This is true, unfortunately. And they might even get annoyed that they're getting ripped off with just the chocolate bar since if you can afford to give them free aniseed balls they're paying more than they have to for chocolate. Even if the chocolate is competitively priced.

some good advice here.
don't have a paypal account

not into the atomhead tunes

rather like the formication stuff

really really liked SC 2, didn't like SC1 quite enough to purchase, and there quite simply isn't enough of what i like on SC3

may still purchase it mind you... when i do purchase i'll possibly get a cd copy too as for mixing purposes i really hate it when two decent tunes are on the same side of a record...

i realise all this isn't really of much use to you trying to shift units though...

I like this release. I can understand that it would not be to everyone's taste though due to the stark variations in the tracks, but to me that is its appeal. Out of the 3 releases though, I would have to say that volume 2 as a whole package is my absolute favourite, but that is just me, and I could even change my mind about that tomorrow :P

some good advice here!

seriously though - sc 2 is one of the best vinyl packages i ever bought, visions of amen and the dissident tune rarely leave my bag and i've played them in clubs and on the radio more times than i can remember

there's just less on sc 3 that really captures my imagination and the tunes i do like don't sway it for me because even if they grow on me i won't have much use for them.

(apart from the formication piece which is excellent dinner party music)

oh hey, btw...where do you go to buy it?

Exactly - so I only buy for utilitarian reasons.

Youd also think id be the last to succumb to Statto's monumental campaigns of guilt and shame, but he even manged to get through to my desolate metal heart. Smile

bought!
I don't think SC3 matches up to the first two volumes.

Apart from the Nubian Mindz tracks and Mean Streets, i'm not overly keen on the rest.

Quantity doesn't necessarily equal quality. Sorry to say...
you know nothing about quality Roll
We're obviously in the same boat then :P
