weird, never had any problems like that, plus you can roll off frequencies on the back..
beats are there to be broken http://musicindevon.org/
in an untreated room...

Haha, yeah untreated room here.
I didn't roll off the highs because of 'fidelity'.
Still, I've read lots of reviews saying they sound forward, harsh etc, guess I am not the only one..
... how important is acoustic treatment in a small bedroom ?

my room is roughly 10 sq ft but has alot of shelving / cabinets with records in them that help to deaden the sound. It's carpeted too.
Square rooms are often the worst behaved acoustically. Postion monitors firing down the longest part of the room if possible and hang heavy duvets off the shelves. I did these things when I was stuck in a box room and it seemed to tighten things up considerably, while remaining cheap and cheerful.. If you're looking at spending a bit, then ignore my amateurish advice!
very

the smaller the room, the bigger the acoustical probelms.

carpet doesnt do a lot

shalving/cabinets might provide a bit of diffusion (spread sound around) but not absorption.

if you can fit em in, bags of rockwool in the corner (leave in plastic wrapping, or cover with fabric if you prefer) are the cheapest way to reduce room modes (your biggest prob in samll rooms).

pm me/start a new thread if you want more info. im an acoustic consultant fwiw.

looks like i have a new thread to start then ! !
Correct a novice for asking, but aren't monitors supposed to sound less good than for instance hifi speakers? Isn't there a point in having monitors that represent how it actually sounds rather than having monitors that alter and colour the sound too much?

They are supposed to have an even frequency response.. so what you are hearing is what is actually there.

I did an experiment the other day.. i was doing some *cough* very amature mastering for a friend and I did it 4 times using 4 different ways of monitoring... The difference in the final result was amazing..

1. cheap slightly better than standard ipod phones
2. pro dj headphones
3. my studio... 5" studio monitors
4. my listening room ... studio monitors (with a sub for extended bass response)

as is pretty obvious the final results were coloured by each, but I didnt realise just how much difference it made.. The master on the cheap headphones sounded so bad on all other monitoring systems it was almost un-listenable

The other interesting observation was that the master that i got from my listening room which I liked best translated well onto all the others.

I am a long way from being a pro when it comes to sound though but I am learning hehe Smile
