Pat Mooney: leading expert on food crisis

Internationally well-known scientists and thinkers are visiting Graz for this years Elevate Festival from 21th to 26th October. Pat Mooney, for instance, from Canada is internationally deemed one of the leading experts on the food crisis, the depletion of genetic resources, as well as on the risks and dangers of genetic engineering, nanotechnology, synthetic biology, and geoengineering. Pat Mooney was also awarded the Right Livelihood Award. Mooney is one of the guest speakers at the Elevate Opening on Wednesday the 21th October.

He`s also going to participate in a panel discussion on Friday 23th October, where he is going to point out the interconnections between the climate crisis, the energy crisis and the food crisis.

The deep and fundamental interconnection between the global crises will also be discussed in the final panel discussion on Saturday 24th October. Besides Mooney also Geoff Tansey, David Barstow and Gabriele Michalitsch will participate.

David Barstow: Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting

New York Times Journalist David Barstow is another guest at this years Festival. In 2009 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. His piece "Message Machine: Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon's Hidden Hand" revealed how some retired generals, working as radio and television analysts, had been co-opted by the Pentagon to make its case for the war in Iraq.

What will the future of journalism look like? This main question is going to be discussed with Barstow and other participants in another panel discussion.

And we are also looking forward to the final panel discussion, where the global crises will be placed in context to each other.

Recently the documentary "The Yes Men Fix the World" had it's premiere in New York. On Saturday 24th October Elevate is bringing the film to Austria. The filmscreening is starting at 8.30pm at the Forum Stadtpark. Free entrance!

"The Yes Men are anti-corporate troublemakers who get themselves invited to high-level corporate conferences and onto television, where they hilariously unmask global injustice. They are the 21st century’s answer to Abbie Hoffman, and like him they care less abut changing consciousness than changing policy. Announcing, as faux spokespeople for Dow Chemical, that the company will at last take full financial responsibility for the victims of the Bhopal disaster, they create a media sensation.(...) The Yes Men collaborated on the entirely fake issue of The New York Times, originally printed last fall, to the great amusement of many. They don’t exactly speak truth to power — but their lies are just as powerful and very, very funny."

King Midas Sound is the duo of Kevin Martin, known for his groundbreaking work over the last decade as The Bug, teamed with Roger Robinson, reputed writer and spoken word performer. The pair first worked together in 2003 on The Bug's Pressure album, but within these King Midas grooves, the visceral drive characteristic of The Bug's fevered sound is replaced by deeper core energies, and graced with Robinson's gentle soul lilt, the combination is blissfully, crushingly powerful. read more...

Jon Hopkins is a musical shapeshifter: a composer, pianist and a self-taught studio wizard. He makes big, bold electronic music using walls of synths, twinkling melodies and amorphous bass rumbles. Hopkins's aesthetic is perpetually intriguing. He transcends genres, melding digital coldness with subtle, bucolic textures; veering from skewed elegance to strange, unsettling depths. Insides artfully constructed, unparalleled palette of rhythmic loops and treated piano can be partly explained by Hopkins' unusual adolescence; he was a child piano prodigy before discovering the bleeps and beeps of dance music. read more...
