Yes, Richard is stopping his Test Industries blog Icon_sad

http://www.testindustries.com/2010/12/the-end.html

he left RA on quite bad terms, all details can be found on the TI blog.
Brophy is a bit of a tit it must be said. Good writer, but a tit.

Why did you say that - do you know me? Have I done something to offend you? You might think I'm a tit for whatever reason, but at least I'm not a coward - I'm pretty sure you wouldn't call me a tit to my face.

Thanks for mentioning SubVersion greenleaf. I haven't updated it for a while due to promotion priorities, but there will be new content before NYE. Hopefully more than collages and reviews too.

While I can see droid's point, and it's much better than being called a straight up cunt, I think it's too sharp a summation given Richard's reasoning on TI, unless it's a positively underhand subjunctive to draw thread reader's into his blog. Anyway, I imagine droid will take observations private from now on.

Counterintuitively:

Archaically amusing, but uncalled for.

From the comments (if you object to this brophy, just let me know. But your blog will be offline from January anyway, as you state yourself.):

Todd Burns (RA editor) Wrote:Hi Richard:

While I can't speak for how everyone at the "RA IP address" feels about you apparently, I can assure you that you were let go from RA because you wrote reviews of the same release for multiple publications, as I outlined in my e-mail to you. There were no "other agendas" at play.
(...)

Feel free to respond point-by-point in the comments, as you always do. I have nothing more to say on the matter in public.

brophy Wrote:Sadly, as I have come to expect from you Todd, your reply is full of weasel words, condescending jabs and blatant half-truths. You did not fire me because I reviewed the same record for multiple publications but because I reviewed a few of the same records for one other magazine.

When you hired me, at no point did you say that this was a deal breaker. Had I known that of course I would not have reviewed the same records. It's very easy to turn around and fire someone when they break a rule that they didn't know existed.

All of which makes me believe you had an agenda all along. Maybe you didn't like the fact that a week or so before you got rid of me in your Kafkaesque manner I questioned RA's ludicrous marking system on an RA thread? Certainly you sent me a very snotty email about it.

Upon knowing the rating system is operated by anyone but the reviewer, I'm instantly siding with the narrative of the second quote purely by its consideration for staff (and audience) democracy. It also suggests a form of tunnel vision on the part of Todd Burns, and makes me a lot less forthcoming in sending RA reviews.

I can see it both ways.

1. It's not common etiquette to write about the same release if you have a monetary contract, just like if EMI puts out your debut album, you don't let Mark Ronson issue it as well without agreeing this with EMI first, even if the project (in this case review) differs in aesthetic.

2. But generally, online sources don't pay anyone; it's purely loved labour. And if DJ Mag wants Brophy's view on a certain release, who are RA to dictate whether or not he should decline it, and hitherto his fee for a magazine that actually offers a wage for every 100-300 word piece on average, or a uniform column?

I could be wrong, and that Resident Advisor does fund the efforts of its reviewers, but it's unlikely. And besides, the magazine should at least have some of it's bloodline's best's interests at heart, otherwise it will fail to pump.

I say all this as someone who has written for several publications and websites, and dealt with plenty of arrogant primadonnas. Richard, I will be reading your blog before it disappears from the web.

Lol How did I miss this.

There I was thinking - should I track Richard Brophy down and call him a tit to his face, or should I simply pass a mild personal remark online because he happened to come up in conversation and I have personally seen him act like a bit of a tit on several occasions?

Like the coward I am, I chose the latter option, little knowing that Richard would google himself or follow his referring links and then go to the bother of registering on SC simply to accuse me of cowardice, putting me in my place, but also, inadvertently confirming my initial summary.

I keep going back to DIB's blog regularly.

It's the only one I still visit, plus there's Dev Null's BlogtotheOldskool of course. Occasionally stop by Simon Reynolds' Energy Flash blog.

apart from that, pretty much every blog I used to check regularly a few years back has packed in. Sign of the times I guess...

Having said that, I basically never check the SubVersion blog I started now and that's so ironic considering I put so much personal info on there.
