MIDI n00b questions

For the first time in about 12 years I'm going to be making music with MIDI, running my synth and EMU sampler.

Forgive my ignorance on this, but I understand that I need the synth in multimode which puts each sound on a different midi channel. But surely 16 channels isn't the limit? What if I'm using 16 on the synth, how can I then play sounds from the EMU for instance?

Help a man out.

The usb (direct usb>synth) is effecticly a midi interface.

Older synths etc need the old 5 pin plug.

A midisport 2x2 (for example) is dirt cheap built like a tank and gives you 2x midi in and out (32 channels effectively).

TBH i never used 16 channels with 3 old midi synths and a sampler so you might not need that many...

I think they will need

Ive got an E-Mu, an Akai and the K4 Kawai, and I really need all of my ports. 16 for the E-mu, (cant wait to get the second midi port (upgrade to 32 part) and the poly upgrade), 16 for the akai (mostly used 7- and 9 for the Kawai (8 part multi and drums ).

unlike "the old days" with the dasiy chian set up
