^^ that Crystal Lake live vid had me near tears. heh. THAT GOOD. metalcore... everything pales in comparison. Crystal Lake are thee PEAK evolution example of metalcore. I'm convinced. Fuck it, nothing else matters in that equation.

sigh.

The new Voivod single carries the same energy of something you might have found on Crass records. Proggy, punky. Perhaps a nod to The Ex?

Chi Pig

I thank you for your voice. The melodies. The KICK ASS GOOD TIME your live shows were, and of course, I thank you for the presence that SNFU was in our collective musical upbringings. Dude collided, touched, and shaped a few directions in our lives. I had no idea then, of the impact of local, Alberta, prairie town hardcore punk could have. We payed the $5 gig entrance, and engaged in some of the best live shows we've witnessed. Canadian music, punk & hardcore in general owes you MUCH. Many will agree. Respects.

Listen.

Chi Pig's story & legacy has been public, documented and embraced by punk & hardcore fans world wide. Addiction & mental health continually coincide to show us examples of utter resilience, will, and definite glimpses of determination - whether through journeys of recovery, success, or via opposing results when harnessing your own will, opting for the fatal. Regardless of choice, we continue to learn from similar stories that may touch or impact our own lives. Musically, Chi Pig represented that for many people. Truly baring his own lifelong successes, failures, & never hiding from it in the process. He couldn't - music & art is what kept Ken alive. THAT is what carried his efforts til the end. Literally, via SNFU, I'll honestly state that the band brought me some of the best live music moments I've personally witnessed in my lifetime.

Props Chi. Once again. Thank you. R.I.P LighterLighterLighter

Punk
^^ cool. I was listening to Harum Scarum the other day.

Chi Pig memories - SNFU had initially broken up for a couple of years in 1989, and Ken had moved cities to Vancouver during the hiatus. It wouldn't have mattered what post-SNFU bands were going at the time, any new band with SNFU alumni was still drawing local crowds, as we were still faithfully attending the gigs if they happened. With knowledge that Ken had started a new band on the west coast, The Wongs appeared and were in town to play a show. I'm sure most people hadn't heard any Wongs songs, as they only had a demo cassette release to their name, but catching Chi Pig live was a given. Summer day, all ages show at a local community hall, The Wongs were on. There was local dissent to the increased rumors that Chi was indeed gay - seemingly confirmed during the time as he did affirm his sexuality publicly then. We were just fans, looking to get our asses kicked live by Chi on stage as always. Of course the most homophobic grumblings were appearing as there was rumors of a local group of bonehead nazi skinheads who were planning to show up at The Wongs gig to "kick the faggot's ass... ", which didn't occur. Chi was quietly walking through the crowd before his set, and continued to rock us like a hurricane that late afternoon, or early evening. Mission accomplished.

I too later would relocate cities to the west coast as well in 1994, when SNFU were again fully active and in their most successful era, where I would see Chi walking around downtown Vancouver occasionally - which he would continue to do for the remainder of his life i guess. Apparently he had already acquired his on stage, cracked skull injury during the 1989 tours prior to the abrupt hiatus - as told via the 2009, "Open Your Mouth and Say.. Mr. Chi Pig" documentary. The injury is what later pushed him into pain & head trauma medication addictions, and then later, his unfortunate schizophrenia diagnosis, alongside further substance abuse & related mental health issues that he battled for the rest of his life. My random 1994 glimpses of Chi in public was before his darkest addiction days to come. 1994 / 1995 I was full on into djing, and attending local raves, thus my attentions were no longer a punk specific thing. A previous coworker from 2013 / 2014 had played a couple local shows with his band opening for the more recent, later incarnations of SNFU, and it seems no matter the era, incarnation, & Chi's public, physical or mental state, SNFU have still always drawn younger generations of fans to shows. There are many, more recent local punk, metal, or hardcore bands that still draw on the SNFU influence for sure. Hence the amount of Chi Pig tributes from the past few days. It is kinda crazy, but fitting.

I'm convinced SNFU fans in Edmonton will erect a Chi Pig statue themselves if the city doesn't initiate the move. And yeah, already nation wide calls in Canada for Chi Pig memorials. Dude loved skateboarding. I wonder if Chi got to watch this Vans, queer skateboarding doc from last month? R.I.P Jeff Grosso as well. Cheers.

One of the best music docs I've watched during the initial, 2020 quarantine months was the Negro Terror (Memphis, TN) documentary. RECOMMENDED! Very insightful, intriguing life, and subsequent, unfortunate death story line of Negro Terror / Chinese Connection Dub Embassy vocalist Omar Higgins, who passed away during the making of the doc last year in April 2019. R.I.P. The doc also perhaps, offers a music & subcultural briefing, very current & specific to the sociopolitical mayhem that is raging in the US as we speak within race, class issues, and BLM perspectives, all reflected within the local, diy, Memphis, Tennessee punk, hc, hip-hop, & skinhead communities.

Great viewing. Take some time and enjoy the documentary if you haven't already. Cheers! Cheers
