I was skimming "No Pocky for Kitty" the other week. It had been a long time since I listened to the album in its entirety. I forgot how many kickin songs there were on the release. Such pop punk brilliance! It really is. I have still have my cassette copy in storage.

There is a band I am reasonably unfamiliar with, called Anti Flag. I finally got my hands on one of their albums physically the other week: "Blood Of An Empire", I think it is called. They were the support act to hardcore metallers Alexisonfire and toured with Ghost Of A Thousand at the 02 Academy, Oxford in around 2011.

What I can say about them from that gig: mosh pit hardcore punk material, slightly similar to Prayers For Atheists whom cube on this forum introduced me to. Which almost makes them entirely skate-punk. In style, that gig was very unwieldy, slightly disorientating and full of goodness, dark goodness. Darkly coloured glass stuff. Like a mild ale. That experience at what was the UK legendary venue The Zodiac in Oxford, home to early performances by The Happy Mondays, Supergrass, The Stone Roses and many more alumni, was definitely a turning point for me to appreciate the gradients of hardcore in rock music more.

Real rock music. Rock music, as Statto said to rebuff Simon Reynolds book on the subject, that isn't about lyrics. That, really, is why we don't have true rock music any more. Bands like The Jam in the 70s and Pink Floyd around the same time polarised the genre in two opposite directions: the first punk, the second - and earliest foreward facing - prog. It, to quote the famous line, was the 'sign of the times'. Historically, as Flower Power phased out, so entered a continuum of pre punk granularity only delayed by the vestiges (money, gloss, glam) of preset template pop rock.
Semantics aside, most rawk musicians secretly wants to be their own version of pop relics - whether it be The Shangri-Las, The Who, Lady Gaga, Kiss, Slipknot, etc. Theatrics, impact, adrenaline is the basic foundation right? Quick release, or 18 min doom metal jams. Adrenaline exists in all extremes. It is an energy that you don't even necessarily need all 5 senses to appreciate. I went to school that had a program for deaf kids so YES, I grew up in school with deaf skateboarder kids who were equally into punk rock, had all the t-shirts and posters in their school lockers. They were even MORE into P.I.L than I was. I asked one of them, naturally ".. how do you hear the music?" Dude said "... I hear the bass, the vibration.. " i.e. THE ENERGY. That's all I needed to hear. I get it. Vibration creates energy, and gets you UP.

Like sex.

Rock music is sexual. That's why it was forbidden early on, and censored, and STILL censored in come cases. Aspects of the industry will always be threatened. Whether it be via traditional rock channels, or excursions around said channels. And perhaps that is a good thing. FEAR sells music. Maybe that will never change? The transmission of ideas will always threaten people. More so now. And yeah, Statto is right, lyrics are not needed. It is the act alone of being visible, or receiving of an energy that scares people still - or creates happiness for an audience. Vibrations maaaaaaan. As an aside, Alexisonfire was top 40 pop music in Canada. It was very interesting to witness. Within "extreme musics", there as aspects of more popular black metal that I consider pop music. The second somebody puts a band poster up on their wall, pop. No? I first saw images of Siouxsie Sioux & Robert Smith in Smash Hits Magazine before I even heard the music at all as a child. The images alone create curious energies, ya know what I mean? Energy can do somethings in people's lives ha.

Just some thoughts.
Energy.

I listened to a lot of Nathan Gray related stuff this past weekend. Every now and then, I still check out what is going on within Boysetsfire / Nathan Gray related music. Some great songs were created in this realm imo, and i still consider myself a fan to some degree. In 2000 / 2001, we'd listen to "After the Eulogy", bands like Shiner, Hum, and Position Chrome, Panacea cd's at work. It was fun. Interesting time. I heard about 9/11 while working a shift that same morning as it was happening. Working in that environment and the music we'd listen to during the shifts, albums like "After the Eulogy" reminds me of those very specific times. Forward to 2020, covid quarantine listening, End Hits Records posts the live recordings of the anniversary release gigs. Appreciative energy. Delivered and received. Props!
