Speaking of bandcamp..new tax laws are going to decimate the site:

http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sji42f

Only found out today...I need to disable any download versions from 1st Jan until I am VAT registered Icon_sad
Quote:ALL countries are affected. If you live in the USA and intend to sell digital records to any country in the EU, then you too will need to pay VAT tax directly to the HMRC.

Wtf? Considering this would cripple bandcamp, I'm just going to wait for them to sort out something to manage VAT.
They have added something to here:

https://bandcamp.com/help/selling

But, it's still going to be a huge pain in the backside and I now need to be VAT registered...so I have to unlist all my digital releases (paid for ones anyway) until I get it sorted.
I reckon it'll all blow over like a sack of spuds.
Another update:

I thought that initially when I heard about this... and, it still might with any luck. Unfortunately, I see alot of artists and labels posting on blogs / Facebook etc saying they are taking down their digital catalogs from their own websites as of January 1st. It seems like alot of people are planning to comply and that's not going to help with this all blowing over !! I currently sell all Subtle Audio releases through my own website, so I now have a decision to make. It's good to see that Bandcamp are going to take care of all the pain in the arse bullsh*t that comes with this new law, so it might be time to sign up for their service... it would be the closest thing to selling downloads on my own website (without actually selling on my own website). ... balls !
Also, I guess it's time to start offering data discs with mp3's / FLAC's / WAV's in my store !

Or a set of Subtle Audio pens :P

So because of this new EU VAT law, many of EU based labels/artist will stop selling music through their own websites, and will have to start to sell it through Bandcamp which means that 15% of the revenue will be now transferred outside the EU, to non-EU-based company (which Bandcamp is). The majority of labels/artist have already been using Bandcamp, but such law change theoretically means that EU encourages those who still sell music on their own websites to make a move and start transferring 15% of their future capital (to use wise economic term Wink ) from EU to US, leaving less money within EU.Chin

As for Bandcamp last post on their blog, good that they sorted it out. However they had to do it, otherwise many people would stop selling music from 1st January onwards through BC, as there are many other ways of selling music through services which pay VAT on their side (like Digital Tunes, Boomkat or Juno). They are probably much less profitable for artists/labels, but they would remain only solution for these who didn't want to register themselves as VAT payers and do loads of tax related paperwork (which for example in Poland is pain in the a**).

Regardless of all above, artists/labels will lose part of their money, as prices which they are selling at on Bandcamp should rather remain unchanged, otherwise if current prices become increased by 15-27% VAT (depending on country where buyer live in) they will be no longer competitive to prices on Digital Tunes/Boomkat etc. So keeping current prices on Bandcamp will cost artist/labels 15-20% of their current revenue (but I imagine that revenue will be still much bigger than in other digital retailers).
Yes to all of that Xyxthumbs
So basically its one mars bar less a month.

If, like most jungle artists, you sell about 5 mp3's a month, yeah Lol

Yes ! How amazing that would be Icon_eek

By the way, just to get this straight - if you sell a physical product and throw some downloads in for free, is that allowed without having to charge VAT for the sale ?

As far as I'm led to believe yes. Weird huh?
So one could sell something like a paper document where the buyers just opt out of having it posted to them?

Yeah, I was trying to think of how to go about presenting it on the site Lol

Something like that anyway.
That's what I was initially going to do through bandcamp, until they stepped in and sorted it out Lol

I would double check to make absolutely sure though Smile
Making it even harder for non-absolute-mainstream acts to get at least some monetary reward for putting out music.

I have just discovered that after recent changes (payment goes to bandcamp instead to artist/label's paypal account etc), at checkout stage bandcamp adds VAT on the top to the price displayed on the release page. So the final price customers have to pay is approx. 20% higher than price actually displayed. Not sure if bandcamp informed artists/labels about that change, however the fact is that if labels/artists keep prices of their bandcamp releases unchanged, buying them from bandcamp may be now more expensive that from other digital retailers.
Yeah that added VAT has really put me off buying downloads from bandcamp, tend to use juno and boomkat now.
Ah, no I hadn't noticed that. That's another kick in the teeth for artists on my label really.
If it's putting people off buying releases then I'd have to reduce the sale price to take account of the 20% vat increase to encourage people to buy on there, but then the artist is getting less than they used to (especially as Juno etc pay woefully pitiful amounts as royalties) Chin

Sigh.............
The only way round it is to pretend that everything is a physical release as they don't add VAT to them Icon_razz
If I just put the postage as £0.00 that should sort it Lol

Hmmm my most recent purchase was from September and the money still went to the label ?!?
