Top Ambient Albums of All Time

Matthewdavid's Mindflight - Trust The Guide And Glide
Carlos Nino & Friends - Going Home
Iasos - Liquid Crystal Love

The Ohio-based Poemme produced one of the best ambient albums of recent years:

Poemme - Arboretum

Mick Chillage never ceases to amaze me with his albums in the vein of Pete Namlook & Tetsu Inoue:

Pixels I, II, III
Faxology
Zen Diagrams
Exulansis
Sheltered
and his collaboration with Lee Anthony Norris as Autumn Of Communion

From the deeper meditational (throat-singing) side:

David Hykes - Hearing Solar Winds
Baird Hersey & Prana - The Eternal Embrace

Some others:

Terre Thaemlitz - Soil
Lull - Cold Summer
MJ Harris & Bill Laswell - Somnific Flux
Lustmord - Carbon/Core
Pete Namlook & Tetsu Inoue - 2350 Broadwas 1,2,3 and Shades of Orion 2
Tetsu Inoue - Organic Cloud & Ambient Otaku

Thanks for the recommendations. I knew about Poemme (I think I have the mentioned album on my wishlist), and I need to spend a few weeks trying to condense all information and add albums on regular rotation.

I also have a list of the top jazz albums of all time and I've begun compiling a list of the best downtempo albums of all time. Although I have hit a brick wall with the latter list.

One true gem in the new age/"neo-classical" (I hate this term) territory:

Virginia Astley - From Gardens Where We Feel Secure

a charmingly beautiful, serene album from the 80s.

I don't use terms like "new age" and "neoclassical" because they're descriptively crap. Neo what, exactly? A re-enactment of the Matrix ideology? It's like neoliberalism. It's bollocks. Kinda like some hipster clique couldn't come up with a better use of traditional language that works well on its own terms.

For instance otherwise, none of my music is new age. New age is lazy. People are lazy, sheepish, and stupid. It's the law of physics.
I certainly hope nobody terms people like Roger Eno or his brother Brian Eno as "new age" in the next ten years, but I can't see it.

The reason "ambient" became so successful is because it didn't try to contrive its own form onto a traditional format, it just metamorphosed old tropes of history linguistically in its dialectical lexicon and threw out all the sub genres, because none of them in collation are relevant

Recommended: David Toop - Ocean Of Sound

As droid told I once, "The Energy Flash of ambient".

Sorry but as I get older I have even less time for hipsterism. People like music or they don't. Some is good some is bad. That's the end of the story.

It isn't featured at Bandcamp or emusic, but you can find it at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Gardens-Where-We-...eel+Secure - I'll have a look someone has uploaded it to Youtube later.

Ateleia - Formal Sleep (Xeric).

Very rare. James Elliot's material is reproduced as a shimmering but fragile tonal waxwork.

The Circular Ruins - The Birth Of Tragedy (Data Obscura)

So many have missed out on the Data Obscura label completely.

Leyland Kirby - Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was

What can I say. Rendered beautifully on 3 cds.

I will not reply to the message Droid because the list is so long, but it looks interesting indeed! I have so much left to discover but, alas!, so little time.

I have been listening to Gallery Six the last couple of days, and I've queued up 36 in my song list. And what about soundtracks? Are they a completely different genre or could some of them be considered ambient? I am thinking about the Vangelis soundtrack for the first Bladerunner movie for instance. I think that it's sound is very futuristic and less negative in atmosphere than some of the more contemporary works.

Here is an article featured today at Bandcamp: Inside Laraaji’s Beautiful Meditation Music - https://daily.bandcamp.com/2018/01/29/in...ion-music/

yes Spectraz soundtracks sometimes work, although i find them really doing the ambient trickster mold when they are not actually for film. Vangelis' best soundtrack work for me is his "Tegos Tapes" sollection highlighted first by John Twells of FACT Magazine...like the 116 Analord tracks you can find that lengthy thing there.

Ambient soundtracks are everywhere, but the key is the word "synchro".

Hakobune - Parhelion

This 45 minutes approx is staggerimg.
Its on Bandcamp. Pure luxury dronery.

I know droid had mentioned Hakobune. He has two contemporary classic ambient albums.

Watching The Prescribed Burn
Wandering Towards What Was Unsaid

Not sure they make a list of sorts though. Smile

Thanks for the recommendations Muttley. I am slowly discovering more producers within the genre that I add to an evaluation list that I listen to at work.

I have come across the genre 'modern classical' when rediscovering ambient, and a few names worth mentioning are: Deaf Center (Otto A. Totland, Erik K Skodvin), Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, Robert Haigh, Poppy Ackroyd, Sophie Hutchings, Akira Kosemura and Max Richter. Are there other names worth checking out? I instantly liked Robert Haighs new album "Creatures of the Deep": https://unseenworlds.bandcamp.com/album/...f-the-deep

On yhe classical tip for 2008 release and after, anything by Peter Broderick. "Float", "Home" on Bella Union, and "Partners" from 2016 are very good. Although to re-shoehorn as ambient isn't really au fait. Greg Haines, Frahm, Broderick...the thrèe men work as friends. I've been up to Oxford to attend gigs featuring all of them. If you want to know more, there's Mp3s given out (mixtapes) on this forum. Also check out http://www.subvertcentral.blogspot.co.uk for the 2009-2010 appearances by these fellas.

So...really now, am I the one having to mention the work of James Clements, aka ASC? Some say he's not Namlook. The likes of Time Heals All, Truth Be Told and his works as Mindspan are all therapeutic gold dust. "The Promise In Your Lies" is my favourite ambient track of 2016.

Ashra - New Age Earth

On the second track of this now. Very nice stuff, reminds me of Mark McGuire's solo material after he collapsed the Emeralds moniker.

Here are a few ASC albums that I saw being uploaded recently, although some of them seem to be old releases.
