i just watched "naqoyqatsi"...it's by the same people who did "baraka" and it's part of a trilogy.

this one represented a series of images pertaining to life centred around technology and its' attendant affects.

the music was scored by philip glass with some really haunting yo yo ma cello solos.

Naqoyqatsi, Powaqatsi, and Kooyanisqatsi. Directed by Godfrey Reggio and scored by Phillip Glass. Baraka is directed by Ron Fricke, who was the cinematographer on Kooyanisqatsi. His next film Samsara is highly anticipated.
I was in attendance at the Michigan theater for the restored print of Kooyanisqatsi with Phillip Glass performing the score live. It was amazing though I couldn't seem to find a date for that one. Go figure :milhouse

chopper is fucking wicked. the fact that its based on a real person makes it kind of scary. some good lines to sample, but my soundcard is fucking rubbish and distorts when i sample from the dvd on my pc.

i thought belly was banal, derivative, self-aggrandizing and self indulgent pap.

i just saw "big fish" which was really really lovely. i think it's tim burton's greatest movie, and it reminded me how utterly unpretentious and genuine his intentions are when making a film, and how that's never a bad thing.
hmmm.. haven't been watching movies lately

the anime-version of metropolis (the very first 20's scifi film) was good.

pi was very cool Xyxthumbs

damn my head's gone all empty.. Neutral
Oi, Baraka, hands down!
people are probably going to laugh at me for this...but one of my favorite films of this year was "school of rock".

it was so completely genuine and heart-felt, and UNPRETENTIOUS (this is a big thing for me...anyone who only watches "films" and not "movies" can go get fucked in the ear), and was this lovely little movie about loving balls-out classic rock music.

other flicks i recommend and own are:

"ghost in the shell" for the soundtrack and visceral, visual intensity
"city of god" was really entertaining and has a vibin' soundtrack

dude...anytime you see dmx on the cover of ANYTHING, just turn around, and walk away.

that's a safe general guideline.

it was basically a vanity project for hype williams. i mean seriously, it's not like hype williams is an especially adept or talented music video producer. ooh look, there's *insert name of hip hop hack* gyrating infront of an expensive something-or-other!

woo!

I thought Big Fish was one of Burton's less appealing work. To me, it was well produced & directed fluff. A feel-good story about how a man can perservere & change the world in his little quirky 'go-getting' way. Most films about overtly go-getting people usually rub me the wrong way though. I understand that isn't the whole movie, but that element really took over for me & the story-line got lost in the aesthetic, which is a trademark of Burton but I felt didn't work with this one.

macc: arnold OWNED in predator...i know the dude's a dinkface mcgillicuddy, but terminator and predator are STELLAR flicks.

raise cain: i don't think that "big fish" was about perserverance at all. it was about the nature of fiction and narrative, about the fallacy of "truth". just because the movie is happy, doesn't make it generic.

i think there's a problem with film these days and the utter pretentiousness that people happily swallow. (ie. people who only watch "films" instead of "movies"). that element of feel-goodness and sweetness has always pervaded tim burton's work. he's always been about the "everyman" who perserveres in extraordinary circumstances, and one of the things i've always loved about him is the compelling sympathy he imbues his subjects with.
