This phrase, which I've never particularly like, seems now to be bandied about when referring to events as recent as 2005

Surely for something to have happened "back n the day.." a more substantial period of time needs to have elapsed??

I saw Skream on twitter mention some garage tune from about 2001 as 'back in the day'.
Not quite.

For me, "Back in the day" is before I was a vampire.
