Interesting.... I need to hear most of these albums.
In fact I haven't even heard of a lot of those artists. The Fall, Gang of Four and Joy Division are all fuckin good bands but I haven't heard any of the albums u mentioned here.
I'm no expert on post-punk so can't offer a top 20, however I would say:

PiL - Metal Box
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
Boys Next Door (Birthday Party)
Gang Of Four - Solid Gold

This reminds me that I must get and read Rip It Up and Start Again

those are the Gang of Four's and Joy Division's best LPs

in the "someone feels worse than me" sense? Smile
yeh i suppose Smile

coupled with the fact that its just a brilliant album but yeh your right Smile
does; the pixies - doolittle, qualify as post punk?
no, that's too late; 1978-83 is post punk; or even 1979-82

TG get props for being pre-punk post-punk Smile
I need to listen to this Blurt album more. What's with No Wave stuff, not your thing or not post punk? Don't know if I would file This Heat or Throbbing Gristle under post punk/new wave, but who cares. Grin

No Wave is definitely more my thing! It was also more of an attack against post-punk in the US

Intentionally yes, but from today's perspective (or at least my perspective Wink) they are both ugly children of punk and often used similar methods.

for me No Wave was all attitude
good fun, but most of the music was utter crap

New Wave had attitude as well, but it was of the "we can do whatever we like" type, and they just gone on with it
a lot of this music sounds quite remarkable even 30 years on

I would – but as you say, who cares? Wink

i tend to disagree. of course there was lots of crap (as always) but also some great stuff. as much as i like unknown pleasures, i'd prefer some mars or dna. and there are still no wave influences in new music i love today, so i'd say it had some value.

i demand an "obscure post punk" mix Falcon

would early sonic youth qualify as post punk?
djfada Wrote:would early sonic youth qualify as post punk?

Chin
because technically they started in 81 and were definetly hevily influenced by punk

i just sampled thurston moore of his box on acid for a new track Grin
my brother is the new wave specialist, he's got way more than me- i just listen to Die Kreuzen's first lp a lot, and other one-off hardcore masterpieces.. i like the period a couple years after new and no wave, just when the Reagan alzheimer's was kicking in strong and things were getting nutty and damaged-sounding.
djfada Wrote:would early sonic youth qualify as post punk?

No. Early Sonic Youth (especially Sonic Death) would come under No Wave
Neutral

no way-ve Teef
Kontra Wrote:No. Early Sonic Youth (especially Sonic Death) would come under No Wave

dunno about that Baffled

they came out of No Wave sure
but I wouldn't say they actually were No Wave

I can see exactly what you're saying, though I would say that because they came from the Glenn Branca school of thought and that they were focused on creating "non music" with a punk sentimentality that they could be classed as No Wave. Bear in mind, I am only thinking of very early Sonic Youth.
sonic youth are the reason i bought my first guitar Grin

i thought it was grunge back then tho
