not exactly scientific Smile but it makes a change from the Guardian's usual position on porn i.e. it's evil and so are the men who consume it

I was laughing more at her occupation. Its a bit like reading a publican telling us why alcohol is good for society.

not really:

wikipedia Wrote:Her films focus on women enjoying sex including lesbian sex and heterosexual sex, with some bisexual sex. Other themes include sex toys, everyday objects (such as a chocolate bar or orange) being used as sex aids, threesomes, group sex and gang bangs. Role playing and fantasy are also common. Sometimes a character from one of her films appears in another. There is a big emphasis on reality both in script and actor performances. In her films she includes a much higher than average percentage of shots which look at the men, which she has termed 'female point of view' shots.

Whether she actually achieves that I don't know, but it's significant that she's trying.

Caitlin Moran Wrote:Pornography isn't the problem. (...) It's the porn industry that's the problem. The whole thing is as offensive, sclerotic, depressing, emotionally bankrupt and desultory as you would expect a widely unregulated industry worth, at an extremely conservative estimate, $30 billion to be. No industry ever made that amount of money without being superlatively crass and dumb.

and:

Caitlin Moran Wrote:In a world where you can get a spare kidney, a black-market Picasso or a ticket to ride into space, why can't I see some actual sex? Some actual fucking from people who want to fuck each other? Some chick in an outfit I halfway respect, having the time of her life? I have MONEY. I'm willing to PAY for this. I AM NOW A 35-YEAR OLD WOMAN, AND I JUST WANT A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR INTERNATIONAL PORN INDUSTRY WHERE I CAN SEE A WOMAN COME. I just want to see a good time.

fair enough Xyxthumbs

No, I dont think they do. Its clear that someone who sells porn has very significant reasons to promote it to a wider audience.

Sure, thats great and all, but (if the above is true) she is like the Swedish avant garde school of film vs. Hollywood - ie, a tiny minority vs a sea of offensive shit.

Yes, of course. Which is basically the point Moran is making: that porn is a horrendous monoculture of shite, and what we need is more porn, better porn.

I think the long term mental health problems via chronic porn use are still unknown but could be prolific.

You could never ethically do an experiment (ie proper research), and therefore causation could not be implied (ie porn usage = mental health problems), but there is most likely some correlational studies showing strong relationships between porn usage and mental health issues. But its the chicken and egg question, are people with mental health issues more likely to use porn?
