Departures - Glasgow, UK

It has been a few years coming, but Departures finally have a new lp dropping July 29, 2016, called "Death Touches Us, From the Moment We Begin to Love", via No Sleep Records (NA), and Holy Roar (UK). I have been waiting to hear a new Departures lp for a bit now.

I don't listen to a lot of melodic hardcore on the regular per se, but I have *specific* elements that catch my ear in hooks, whether it be melodic hardcore punk, pop punk (of course), and even power pop in general. I have a looong history with pop punk, so anything that chimes in those favorite elements for me that I enjoyed for decades on wards, is always a good thing in my world. I am picky. Smile Departures is actually one of those bands that delivers most of those elements for me. They were a great find in my world.

I sometimes find it odd to have melodic hardcore, or screamo tunes in my head, as often the point of the sounds is NOT to be "hummable" if you will, or NOT to be accessible at all - often the point of the sounds is to be as unlistenable as you can, to various degrees. Given that, I've had Departures tunes in my head this past week, in anticipation of the new lp, and that says something. The previous Departures, 2012 lp "Teenage Haze" is a nice example of everything I've mentioned that catches my ear - hooks, drive, depth, with some dude ripping his vocal chords, screaming over everything. For me,it works. "Teenage Haze" was a good record. I'm listening to it as I post Xyxthumbs

I wait for the new Departures, July 2016 lp to drop in a few days - because depending on my mood, it should be the sort or release I have to dissect in full, as I have with previous Departures releases. I hope the record does well for the band. They do a good job at that melodic hardcore thing. There's a NEW Departures lp about to drop, Scottish hardcore kids doing good things. I approve. You should check it out too.

Thanks for the tunes guys.

Literally put, as a music fan, I wouldn't be here without SHOTMAKER (1993 - 1996, Belleville, Ontario, Canaduh). IMO, Shotmaker are basically one of the more vital Canadian hardcore equations to have existed, influencing much of the US 90's post hardcore sounds in their wake as well. The posthumous Shotmaker affiliated bands that came after the band's demise were great too, I have enjoyed them all. I still dig up the sounds on occasion. 30 Second Motion Picture only put out one 1997 lp in their brief existence that I would definitely recommend.

Likewise, If i haven't posted it already,Three Penny Opera (1998 - 99) continued on with that Shotmaker dynamic, showcasing a more melodic side at times. All great listens if you can dig them up, largely via Troubleman Unlimited in the US, and Spectra Sonic Sound (Ottawa, Canada)

I'm listening to the NEW Descendents record as I post.

regardless of vocalist duties, Alvarez, Stevenson, & Egerton REALLY are IT. But the world & pop punk in general knew that already. WE wouldn't be here without them. Smile

The bass.. Alvarez for prez! I'm a huge fan. Business as usual.

A NEW Descendents record. GO!

I am a Tiger Army  fan. As I would, I am digging the NEW lp.  I'm a Nick 13 fan in general, with or without the band. Nice to hear some new jams. It has been a while.

Less psychobilly wreckage, definitely leaning more towards the more chill, country / rockabilly side of things, all is good. Pop!

I LOVE GAG.

I like when unlistenable hardcore bands make dumb music videos for their songs too. double win!

you can check out a live GAG set, or the releases, and they consistently sound like an unlistenable hot steaming pile of shit.

mission accomplished.  GAG! Xyxthumbs
