Just realized I love tech-step more than any other sub-genre of dnb. Any good '97 tech-step mixes about, then? I know a little, but not enough!

Silver Blade is the almighty
What makes a tune techstep really though? Futuristic sounding, not 94 jungley?, between 96/98? I dont know. Silver Blade ticks all boxes though, and tickles my fancy I might add.
Does tech-step still exist as a sub-genre? In ye're opinion, I mean.
I'd characterise Spectra-soul's a-side on their new ep on nu directions as being pretty close. Also Instra:mental+Jonny L's output 1-2. Any other good recent examples? Also I don't think it should be limited to strictly steppy stuff, like one-two beat structure. It's all about sparse, metallic beats and proper atmospheres, generally of the dark & moody variety I reckon photek's early stuff was closely linked to the sound, for me it's a synthesis of the values of both jungle and tech-step. I might be wrong though...
Photek - Third Sequence anyone?
Might just fit Naphta Wrote:tyranny Wrote:not forgetting the mighty silver blade! i think it was a bit of a transitional tune in that it has none of the rawness of the early no-u-turn and emotif classics but it still has pretty much the same aesthetic - although by this stage the radical grunginess and militancy of techstep was starting to be lost and it had lost it's "shock of novelty" value. certainly not overrated though, it's definitely an all time classic in my book as for techstep, you can be a strict taxonomist and insist that techstep is 96-97 sample based jungle with distorted bassines and a grungy dystopian aesthetic that stemmed from the results of a long recession and 18 years of tory rule, the dismantling of the welfare state and the privatisation of social capital or you can end up with a fairly meaningless word that doesn't really describe much more than jungle + basslines put through a few guitar distortion pedals Bonz Wrote:Also I don't think it should be limited to strictly steppy stuff, it never WAS about strictly steppy stuff at the time to be honest... check out the tech steppin lp on emotif and the torque lp

as for whether techstep exists as a genre today i would have to say "no"
although there is stuff being made that resembles it rather well - "fire like this" on secret operations being the most techsteppy tune of recent years imo - and that jonny l vs. instramental tune you already mentioned is very fine too

Some good points Tyranny, it's the vibe we're looking for here.
You are wrong about Silver Blade though, it's definitely not techstep tyranny Wrote:as for whether techstep exists as a genre today i would have to say "no" how is techstep a genre?
Silver Blade is one of the greatest tunes ever if not the greatest, overrated?!
Some nice dakstep in here

Sorry if it didn't come across as intended. When does a tune stop bearing a 'resemblance' to a genre and start being a part of it? If either of those tunes had used a guitar pedal in the making of their basslines, could I THEN start calling it tech-step? I mean, we've already got the recession on the way Also why would tech-step be a meaningless word exactly? Would it not be a useful word to describe the differences between a tune like shadowboxing and some all-out ragga-core track from 94-95? I'm not to well up on me ragga-jungle Sir Loris Of Crowthorne Wrote:Some good points Tyranny, it's the vibe we're looking for here.
