For anyone interested in the history of genres, automatic classification of genres, etc., I'd like to recommend my colleagues' work:
http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~cmckay/paper...tation.pdf The relevant historical and psychological basis for genres/classification can be found from the pages 87-111. Statto Wrote:Shiva Wrote:I have come to the recent conclusion there are only 3/4 real genres: Rock can be Pop or Jazz depending if it was written/arranged for mass market or artistic depth. Same for Techo. E.G DJ Fresh is DnB but Pop. DgoHn - is DnB but Jazz. I have no idea what "Noise" or "Concrete" is, but I imagine they are more Jazz then Pop.
hardcore jungle drum n bass is my favourite

Ornette Wrote:I get my information from many discussions on this and an interview of Paul Ibiza on Kool FM on B2VOS ages back. I may still have the recording hanging around somewhere. Ok so I've found the recording in question, turns out this is actually off an old Uncle Dugs show from when he was on Kool FM Â Â Â PAUL IBIZA TALKIN ABOUT JUNGLE TECHNO.mp3 You can hear him talking about the tune and Mad P Here was TURNER's comments on the clip: Quote:TURNER @ B2VOS "What is Jungle Tekno?" p5, Tue Aug 15, 2006 8:25 pm
Had an interesting conversation this week with an industry insider who told me in terms of sales volumes, 1996 97 98 were the strongest years for drum & bass. What do you make of that?

Yes but I think he was suggesting 1998 was the peak of an upwards trend
It makes sense. 90-94, there would have been loads of anthems that sold 30,000+ and a healthy 1-3000 of normal tunes. Post '95 there was more exposure internationally, more labels, more DJ's, and a steady 1-3000 for almost anything. Then there was the Mercury prize and steady mainstream exposure.
I guess it depends what you mean by 'drum and bass' though.
Would you believe that I don't have any D&B records from 1998 from memory that had crossover appeal. The only one I remember having in my vinyl collection is: Steve Alexander - Isometrics EP (Reinforced).
Dont feel bad Mick, I cant remember any D&B records from 98 that had ANY appeal!

Some update to this thanks to JJ of rolldabeats
The Noise Factory track does appear to date from towards the end of 1991 however may be a bit earlier than I thought with an airing on a Colin Dale Kiss FM show from 28th October 1991. However, it seems the term 'jungle techno' was around some time before that. Apparently there are a few Top Buzz sets from April/May 1991 with Mad P using the phrase, including one where he states: "and it happens to be jungle techno for those in the know" So, i'm wondering if the Paul Ibiza comments above were for an earlier Ibiza Records release?
BUMP
Ha ha. An early reference to drum & bass within the music I've found, from 1992 "Drum + Bass Programme" http://www.discogs.com/Sub-Love-One-By-O...se/1099650 (2nd February 2016, 12:02)Ornette Wrote: BUMP quality tune that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhmvyKV33qE Both sides are great.
beats are there to be broken http://musicindevon.org/
Allright I have only read the last two pages so forgive me when the following has already been mentioned, but a very early refenrence to "Drum n Bass" can be found in The Invisible Man's track "The Beginning", who sampled (I think) Mad Professor saying "Strictly Drum and Bass". Record got released in Summer of 1993. Anyways, good opportunity to post this superb track:
