Listening as I post.

My brother and I talked about Pushead last night.

Seems fitting to be listening to this, late night soundtrack.

Felix Havoc of Havoc Records spins the records from Pushead's "Unofficial Top 100 of the '80s" while offering insight into the social and political climate of the 1980s and illustrating how the angst and outrage of the era manifested itself in hardcore punk. Felix also details Pushead's contributions to hardcore in the 1980s through Pusmort, Septic Death and his writings in Thrasher and Maximum RockNRoll.

Liminal Voices - Soft Kill Documentary

I starting shooting the Soft Kill Documentary during their tour with the CHAMELEONS.
An Open Door came into my life at the right time. Having never seen them live, I searched but could find no good live footage nor any real information on them. Then their tour with Chameleons Vox came up. I wrote them and asked if I could interview and film them, and they agreed.
I drove up to Sacramento, walked in just as they were setting up and started shooting. It was surreal, but I knew the music and what I wanted and my shots just flowed naturally. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE ME TO POST THE FULL LIVE SACRAMENTO SHOW. Or any of the full lives shows in this film.
I wasn't able to do any proper interviews during tour. So a couple of months later I then up to Portland, Oregon. This was right around the time they were finishing recording their third album, "CHOKE".
Most of the major facts that most fans want to know are included in this film. Tobias talks about his career from Blessuer Grave to Soft Kill, the dark days following 2011's critically acclaimed seminal debut," AN OPEN DOOR ", to the development of the dark heavy driven second album," HERESY ", and he also talks about the elusive, " CIRCLE OF TREES".
All this and more plus some really hot live performances.

I heard Hum, "Step into You" in my dream just a few hours ago.

It really is a beautiful song. The entire Hum, "Inlet" lp from last year is a vision of riffs. "Inlet" creates happiness. It is an album of healing, a record of escapism. A chance to stomp on the incessant bullshit, invigorate, renew, and step out of the muck for a bit. I live.

I've had a sort of long, shitty week - not my own dramas specifically, but those of others. People are draining. Really draining. We survive, we move on.

I love pop. I've had Fiddlehead songs in my head all week @ work. I think there's a ghost at work too. Weird shit is happening. I'm still working night shifts, desperately seeking solutions to get out of night shift work. It will happen.

Pop Punk Tuesday, & yes, a "Step Into You" revisit. Cool?

Wedding Present's "Suck" could be a Jawbreaker song. Totally. Some Cinerama tunes could be Jets to Brazil tunes. And visaversa. Schwarzenbach, David Gedge, similar bash & pop. imo.

Brahm are fun.

Started a couple of new jobs this past month, back to regular morning / daytime hours thank gawd. FUCK that night shift bullshit, once again, took the night gig at the time for 8 months to mitigate the covid risk with less staff around, mission accomplished and good riddance! A purpose was met. My new boss was / is an late 90's, early 2000's emo fan. My first 2 shifts we listened to Boards of Canada all morning, third shift I recommended Paula Temple to get the lack of sleep energies up, today for my 4th shift, I recommended Jawbreaker - good choice. I introduced him to Forgetters, and had a really geeky almost 3 hr convo about pop punk & emo, Blake Schwarzenbach, NYC, walking through Brooklyn, beabadoobee, going to Detroit to see shows, Aaron Turner, Polvo, Christian hardcore in the 90's, my love of doom metal & such. He knew Naked Raygun but not Pegboy which was on a pop punk playlist he had going, Melvins, and how his Beatles was Nirvana, visiting Kurt's house in Seattle that people loiter around, and we talked Conor Oberst. He's from southern Ontario but has never heard Grade, and said he was too young (?) to experience Alexisonfire's earliest days locally. I was shocked. Dude is from southern Ontario, loves pop punk & emo, BUT HAS NEVER HEARD GRADE!!??? wtf.

We'll be doing some deep dives, emo morning shift soundtrack talk I'm sure tomorrow - I already recommended Unfun & Sumac for the mornings' intro sounds. Maybe we'll do a Moss Icon marathon soon too. Mathrock.. yep, talked a bit about that too, industrial, crazy huh? Another thing we might have in common. lol

Its Tuesday. I geeked out on pop punk this morning at work with my new boss. It got me thinking:

^^ Have you watched this queercore doc? As mentioned in the doc, I remember when Pansy Division toured with Green Day when Green Day first blew up.. it shook things up a bit for more narrow minded crowds for sure. ha. I lived in the Pacific NW then, so much of the early riot grrrl stuff, Pansy Division releases on local Vancouver label Mint Records, Kill Rock Stars, etc. was all just local music. Behead the Prophet NLSL, great band. I met Jody from Team Dresch when she was playing a Hazel gig, etc. West coast punk & hardcore has always been really fluid & accessible between locations, from Canadian happenings down to California, etc. You learn a lot from differing experiences within a subculture, all happening at the same time. That's what I remember most about those times. Bruce La Bruce used to write for Vice Magazine earlier on back then, when Vice was originally based in Montreal, he used his column as a diary while making movies if I recall. Vice introduced many to Bruce La Bruce. Crazy to think about that now. lol.
