I have a thing for EBM short for Electronic Body Music - possibly the unfunkiest, "whitest" dancemusic ever, had it's heydays in the late 1980s was somewhat the crud-ish distant cousin of elegant house and crazy acid. In fact back in the day (and I only know this from my old music mags which had ads from dance-music specialist shops in them, a great resource for musical "archeology") a lot or rettles of that style appeared to have been quite popular.
This thread might appeal to Torment or anybody really who happens to like that stuff.

I pseudo-crashed an EBM dress code once. I got in in my non goth wear that night. Had a hale whale of a time, even though I'd kinda already left into the dream world.

^^ I like the "..unfunkiest, whitest dance music ever... " part. TRUE... to a point, if you think about it. People wore lots of black clothes, lol.
But yeah, I grew up listening to the stuff in a way, particularly via late nite college radio shows who would feature industrial / ebm of the time. During that time, if you lived in western Canada, cities like Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, etc. bands like Front Line Assembly, Hilt, Skinny Puppy, anything Nettwerk Records (Vancouver, BC record label) related was all local music if you will. Alternative Tentacles was always a force in California, on the west coast, with LARD releases, Beatnigs (Michael Franti's earliest industrial hiphop-ish band..), etc so that was sort of the path of hearing about "ebm"/ industrial sounds on a somewhat local basis back then. Portland, Seattle, Victoria BC, Vancouver BC, etc have always had active, early noise scenes as well. Of course, all heard alongside, and being influenced by European stuff, Chicago sounds, etc.
The punk & industrial scenes in the sparse cities in western Canada were transient, as punks and the like would live in some of the cities at various times in their travels. So, word got around. Initially, you'd find the music, on cassette, or vinyl, along with the hip-hop vinyl 12"s in the late 80's / early 90's found only in my local "indie import record shops" as they were called then, ha, before specific electronic dance music shops catering to the then emerging dj culture starting opening up. So, Wax Trax! 12"s were found in the same shops as Eric B & Rakim 12"s, even dancehall reggae vinyl & cassettes sold at the time, if you were at all into "dj culture" then. And that's how techno started showing up in the same local "import record shops" in my area gradually after that, by the early 90's for sure.
Hip-hop & Industrial musics were synonymous with me growing up, as there's equally a fair large influence of 80's hip-hop on industrial related musics of the time, which I've always enjoyed, at its best :
The Beatnigs (Alternative Tentacles Records), Michael Franti, later Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Dang, the Beatnigs, that's almost obscure these days. "ebm" production, via a more free form, hip-hop path.
Download..
INCREDIBLE production! A post-Skinny Puppy related project, featuring cEvin Key and Dwayne Goettel, if you are unfamiliar. Also featuring Mark Spybey, Filth aka. Phil Western of Dead Voices on Air, and more. IMO, out of most "ebm" related stuff that was being released in the 90's, Download is a great example to witness evolution of production. Equally producing stuff that could have been released on Warp Records at the time, techno flourishes, ambient, and more, they went for it. I'd recommend Download to anyone who has never delved into the project.
GOOD.

Of course, there is RECENT "ebm" that could be worth checking out.
Although, entirely derivative & cliche in this day & age, there are some elements of ebm that catch my ear these days, when done well. It's all about the kick drum for me personally, ha. VOCALS are entirely subjective... let alone the dumb lyrics of said vocals, which I have no interest in deciphering, lol. i could do without vocals if at all possible in most cases. Still, for recent sounds, I like some of Kant Kino's stuff in places.
