as i said before there have been some shortcomings in the formation and development of america, even its behavior from time to time. HOWEVER, it IS a meritocracy. And if you want to come up you can. That makes it great.

I'm European and I've been living in the US for quite a while now.
I'm in San Francisco, which might not be the best representation of the US, but I meet lots of Americans here who know what's going on outside the US better than most of us.

Also, I find most Americans (at least here in the Bay Area) super bummed about Bush politics and sad to feel that the rest of the World hates them because of that. But again, it's San Francisco, one the most liberal cities in the US. I guess it's not the same in central states, I don't know ...

well put. let's also take a moment to shatter some of these stereotypes even further. not everyone that's a staunch christian is a nationalist, or ignorant. not everyone that likes to hunt and fish (as I do) is a redneck or unsosphisticated etc. Not everyone that is conservative in the truest sense is right wing. Take Barry Goldwater for instance - a man who was pro choice, pro gays in the military, and sympathetic to drug legalization. True conservatism is indeed very liberal. AND history didn't start with Bush, and Obama is far from maganamous. As for his race. It's irrelevant to me. I don't play identity politics. He's a well spoken, competent man, a very formidable politician. Trouble is I don't like his politics very much. AND, he's more like George Bush than he is different. Juxtapose their voting records, from Obama's short tenure as senator with Bush's reign as president. AND, their mutual support of the FISA bill nails the coffin shut on civil liberties. That's virtually an extension of the Patriot act.

Contemporary Liberals are not necessarily right. Particularly far leftists. That being said I have no time for the right either. As a libertarian, or a classical liberal if you will, I share no affinity with the Democrat or Republican parties. There is no place in either of their ranks for me because neither of them care genuinely about civil rights and freedom.

My point is: to understand a country (and its culture), go live there for a while. You might not agree with what's going on, but at least it'll be clearer as to why it functions like that.

Unless I'm from the moon, I do of course live in a 'nation state', and so what if I've 'benefited from its existence'. We've all benefited from all kinds of horrible things done in the past, that doesn't mean we cant criticise historical developments.

I'm not in any way bashing Americans or anyone else here, what i am saying is that patriotism/nationalism causes far more harm than good, and when you think about it, it's an utterly arbitrary and meaningless way of drawing divisions between people. 'I love my country', 'I'm proud to be -------', WTF does any of this even mean? You may be partial to a particular culture or lifestyle, or be proud of the accomplishments of your peers, but anyone who makes the jump from that to talking about how their nation is 'great', is making a statement of general totality that rests on some very shaky ground.

If I was American, I would be very careful about talking about how brilliant America is. It's an amazing country in many ways, and I have no beef with its people, but it's also a boiling shitheap of cuntishness which has inflicted agony on hundreds of millions of people (including its own population), and when you discuss how the abstract concept of it as a nation state is 'great' you're implicitly ignoring thse facts.
