I've concluded this today:

BJ Nilsen & Stillupsteypa's "Space Finale 1.2" is my second favourite track ever. I listened to it on Boxing Day at one my sister's and it still sounds absolutely fucking amazing. The whole piece is 22 minutes long but where I lose it is 2 minutes in with that drone that sounds like honey slowly dripping off the face of the earth. This euology sound repeats for about 5 minutes until shifting into galactic arpeggios and closes with four loud blasts of noise. Experience it, buy this for New Year:

Lucho Ripley is an artist residing in a small village by the sea in Asturias, North Spain. His debut album Megablast was released on US label Symmetrical Records. Lucho has been playing the guitar since he was 19 and over the years he has developed and honed his technique to what it has become today - a warm bed of reverb-drenched guitar layers. This technique is certainly not something new however in Lucho's work it is particularly well executed as you'll hear for yourself.

Influences of The Cocteau Twins, Budd/Eno and Robert Fripp are evident but a keen interest in cinema also shapes the direction of Lucho Ripley's sound. 'Spirit Of Wonder' was created with the intention to 'polish' the recordings captured from a Les Paul Gibson and Epiphone Casino with simple effects in a home studio environment.

This 3 track EP captures a spirit of wonder as you listen, the idea behind most Ambient music. There is no pretense or overriding concept behind - just beautiful guitar-led Ambient music executed to a very high standard. The accompanying artwork is an open-source water colour image to reflect the work of J.M.W Turner with the blue tones mirroring that of the sea and sky."

This is from a 2 sided EP released this January. One side is ok smooth DnB with 2 Step beat patterns, The other side is quite ambient-ish.

Villem and McLeod "Borrowed Love" (Utopia Records) - those guys have also had releases on Warm Communications already among others.

Last year I discovered British drone master Paul Bradley. This year it's the beautiful drones of David Tagg. I have two of his recordings now, "Expanding Electronic Diversity" & "Waist Deep Seas Of Milk". Two excellent albums.

So because I've been listening to more drones than usual I've decided to do a drone mix. Nothing extraordinary here, just one drone slowly slipping into the next.

Most of the music here is fairly new. Almost all of it released this year or last, except of course for the Aloof Proof, which almost counts as new because of the reissue last year. This was fairly easy to put together but it flows nicely. Should be excellent for sleeping.

A couple excerpts from Fluid by moi - Strie - Struktura, and Dauw - Chamber Loops, reviewed pre-copyright Wink

Strie - Struktura

The main feeling I get from this release is a sensation akin to touching one’s own skin. In the sense that “Struktura” feels familiar, yet it is also unpredictable in terms of blood fluidity and the arising conglomeration of spirit between vein and surface texture. Of course, these are mere descriptive generalisations of an emotion that has to be felt by the listener, but they go some way to explaining a personal development of Strië’s refracting of the musique concrete framework with an early electronics essentialism. It’s quite like dub techno pioneers Rhythm & Sound as played by Morton Feldman. Iridescent glitch modules forming a cascading whole on second track “Man And The Cosmos Around”, with a resonating ring modulation being pierced palatably by atomic shifts in drone and white noise. These layers form a melody not unlike Christian Fennesz or recent Fluid reviewees Anjou, or similar ilk.

The pedometer presence — rhythm and metre — never slashes at itself or hollows out an edifice to leave on this album. Quite asymmetric in scope, the general consensus in Strië’s compositions — strings stretched and overlapping instruments — becomes abducted by a spacey finale. Quite like BJ Nilsen & Stilluppsteypa’s epic composition of the same name, there are temporal temperaments that flit and flounder like a soul on the edge of a lead weight. Sparkling chasms form a viaduct impression on “Untitled 1956″, a sensible encounter between previous Strië strings and new cashew nuts and bolts of percussion, falling out of a posterity packet until there’s nothing left. Hearty drone swells and pulsating pushes of mood.

‘The Steamer Odin’ continues this theme with an altogether more coherently atmospheric structure, gaseously changing into solid and liquid forms like a candle over wax. Fire is present in the overall outlook, as if a genial metamorphosis is about to appear. In strident walking patterns of 16 bars the unwravelling Marsen Jules-like compost is splayed out in the watered soil and left to ferment a forgotten past — where does this thought go, why is the ideology headed, what does it mean for the concurrent endeavour?

Observationist sampledelia would seem a precursor to Iden Reinhart’s role as communicator with her audience. For example, “Foxes” flirts with a kind of deviant prescience from organic instruments such as viola to shuffling Murcof-style beats. This frisson with unadulterated melancholy places her music in a kind of Victorian: a rhizome (the rudiments of classical music, in this case) that touches on transcendence, ordered in its thinking rather than trivially lateral. What this means for her listeners is an apple that never rots, always maintaining a continuity over delivery, and which benefits from stripping back the drama in the nature of timelessness.

Bryan Ruhe - Chamber Loops (Dauw)

The centrifuge of chamber music has become dissected by the genres musique concrete and contemporary classical in the last
7 years. As the string quartet lies low, the synths and crusty vinyl distortion is given precedence to glow. Artists like
The Caretaker and indeed Dauw, on this spotlighted, spellbinding short release 'Chamber Loops' exemplify the tradition of the
hauntology maxim, while proliferating sound palette into a gloopy Cezanne brush-in.

The artist Cezanne certainly made waves in both his paintings and his cultural claim, but what for the dying art of
hauntology? Crucially, this sounds like what Dauw is not trying to achieve. There is no 'forced' or 'uber-scratched-to-the-
point-of-silly' dimension sculpting with 'Chamber Loops'. As on 'Rose', the tones and chords blossom out from waxy synths
that are impressionistically reverb-heavy and echo-y to the point of harmonic pay-as-you-go. It's economical music, and the
effects show on the listener; there's lots of room to breathe, packets of select tonal digestives; and a general easiness
about the whole shebang that places you, the audience also in a comfortable position.

One can imagine the spacey solemnity of 'October' as fused in subject and musical context. The Milieu/Jasper TX-esque drones
fill in lieu a thick ocean of emptiness that builds a lamp in your brain circuitry in order to collapse the fibres into each
other; in other words, moreover, the limbic system is relaxed and soothed, creating one of the highlight moments of the EP.
It's quite in line with The Caretaker's fine-grained sampling of 'An Empty Bliss Beyond This World' by this point, a cannon
of romanticising early 30's ballroom sounds shooting forth through the ceiling and out of a smoky chimney.

Given the gap left by The Caretaker's now better-known alias Leyland Kirby and proto-techno patrons Demdike Stare for the
whole hauntologism in 2015, Dauw can take centre stage with this short collection of wonderful forgotten memories. That's
definitely what they feel and sound like, forging signature meaning and then transcending the context of calligraphy to push
thoughts around the mind that you never quite remembered quite the same before. It's an essential release.

Father - Return of Father (Root Strata DL)


Surging yet dreamy drones. Weary vistas. Absorbent scales. Texture stricture, tonal coolant on working patterns. Lots of
angelic-styled chorus sections. 'Damp' wool from worn out wires. Pulsing fragmentation, smoothed by time. Mountaintop ordnance, never falling but airborne and in flight. 'Invisible Cindy' somewhere in the outer reaches.

We reach a plateau, obscured by layers of cloud. Plentiful rain droplets shapeshift across the foreseen skyline.

The credence comes through surfing crests of naked air. Currents of life embodied in sound. Sounds of heavenliness cocooned
in an empty shell. The strings of the guitar bristle like a beard washed with warm water. They resonate as part of the fibre
and texture, but at the same time splay away from surface intent. The synths owe much to the wholesomeness of modular systems
and richly kineticise the ouevre in a fashion of a walk in the park to bake bread: disconnected in original purpose, but
interconnected when seen as complimentary before/after exercises.

Jasmine Guffond - Yellow Bell (Sonic Pieces CD/DL)


Superbly peculiar music post Kreng's doomfest of a release; a 45 minute abstract ambient release from Jasmine Guffond.
Peppered by inter-vowelled vocals and synths that join up in patterns towards a solemn ennui, all the while a constant soft
beating of 808 drums and live percussion crowd out the arrangements like a delicate pattern on a glass plate. Yes, the music
is ultimately thin and water-like, slipping from one stream to the next. But never precariously; all the pieces run their
course with a kind of magical praxis pushing the core elements to the fore. The behaviour of the human parts in the tracks -
for example the female friendly voices in 'Lisa's Opening' are comfort and not ill-edged. This purity in solemnity, a fine
touch on sweet phrasing with lilting progressions - take 'RR Variation' at close and its peaceful garden atmosphere - irons
out the creases of an amorphous creation that is very heartwarming, and very welcome in the hands of the Sonic Pieces label.

FR 138 - Nils Quak - Moire / Braille

Very little strikes as obvious on nils quak's 'Moire/Braille' sequenced piece. The split name is due to this releases being
segued from two separate releases. Like a phoneline with a connection missing, the music is uninterrupted, remarkably silent
and yet possessed of an unearthly voice that tranmogrifies the source materials.

The musics are spliced together so they form a segmented order as if listening to one track from one release after another.
However, they flow auspiciously seamlessly between drone modes, and the transition from 'Linen' to the magnificent 'Orgon'
is pure bliss. 'Orgon' drifts with such an ultramundane existence about itself. The piece conjures up images of abandoned
sideroad buildings and deserted egyptian ruins.

Overall there is a detached sense of wonderment in mood, an opaque dark alleyway down a city esplanade. As in
those circumstances, nothing is more than everything, and everything in nothing can become overwhelming. With 'Moire/
Braille', there is a pickpocket signification of rudiments of musique concrete, unfettered closcrete (this and discrete music,
mixed with classical) and incidental music, straying inches past the flag pole, weary of its origins. Quak is no quack, in
short, demonstrating a demo-fied rawness in approach in sewing a release together. As well as siding with it because of a
demonstrative Eliane Radigue and Pauline Oliverios likeness, Nils has a point to make that stretches beyond eyesight.

French composer Zed - he released an Ambient album in 1978, inspired by the classic SciFi novel "Dune" , reissued last year on CD and vinyl.

I love those 70s synth sounds anyways so it's no suprise I like this quite a lot:
