glad you said it nick. I was getting sick of everyone popping up every week with a new label with a fanu or AO tune as their first release, waiting for P+D.
Then we never see any releases, then we hear whining about how distributors wont give small labels a chance and how they hate the breaks. Then ppl saying they have tunes signed to a bunch of nonexistent labels. Shit some of those tunes have been on "dub" for over a year.
Press em up and get em out ppl! I was going to do this with a couple of selector moldy tunes but then decided my money was much better spen promoting Fortified.

i love vinyl, and i will continue to support that format. i'm also coming around on the whole mp3 320 download idea. i think label heads shouldn't be so fixed about making sure it gets to vinyl, and embrace online delivery more readily. you can download hive's tunes from the itunes store now. beatports getting bigger every week. in present industry financial times, i think it's better to have any money coming in, than none at all.
i shouldn't've read this thread,too depressing.
I suppose if anyone should fix up & get off their ass it's me & put out all my own shit & reap the rewards.

theres nothing wrong with signing tunes to labels!
and what is that talk about ego boost?
thats the stupidest thing to say, Arcae.
not ego boost,survival.
After all you make tunes to get signed so when ppl want to sign it then it makes sense, but a year after some of this b.s. I have 2 re-evaluate this whole thing right now.

I love the idea of labels just cutting the crap and pressing the records themselves... DIY forever
Plus it means that when all the idiots wake up and realise what dons some of these guys are, we'll have all these super-rare records worth hundreds because they only pressed up 500 copies

awesome rant arcae. i agree 100% when it comes to starting up a label.
HOWEVER,
i personally refuse to DIY anymore. as someone who's had 2x12"s and an EP out already and had a label for a few years, making your money back is NOT always a guarantee.
I lost about $1000+ combined on the first two records, even though I pressed them myself. Nevermind the extra money on promoting, postage, promos etcetcetc....Quite honestly, I'm 25 and I have a life to live as well. I found that the label was taking away from me, making my personal life super difficult, no matter how much I wanted to put out the music and promote the artists. So after a 2 year hiatus, Gamma Ray is back but this time it's P&D or nothing. Mind you, I do have a P&D deal, hence why it's taking longer to release GRR004 (well, GRR003 technically because of GRREP001) but if I didn't have this deal, I'd fold the label. It's impossible to explain how much it drains you financially & emotionally, especially when you have a full time job and other things to worry about.
