i recommend a casio keyboard of some kind.

for little more than 50 quid you can pick up a model that has 'realistic' instruments and some rocking preset beats. i have one that has a 'fill' and 'fill 2' button so i can mash up the preset breaks on the fly. also if you just press one key you can get a whole chord, bass and musical arrangement.

LOGIIIC :P
i don't use apple or cubase for studio anymore, but i like some of the vsts that came with cubase so i kept them.. they are both the same, they're both hard to figure out but try them both and see which works best for you.
what do u use SETI?

There r loads of good sequencers out there, especially on the pc.

Stuff like Sampltitude & Sonar r bloody under-rated when all things considered there equally as powerful as anything else you can buy, excluding protools HD.

oN THE mAC i THINK digital Performer is also very useful but doesn't seem 2 get much use outside of the states Baffled

yep, i use pcs, sonar, cakewalk, vegas, fl, anything that actually works Lol
personally i've been using oldskool cubase 5.1 for 3 years now.

i've thought of upgrading to SX many times, but after reading this http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Aug02/ar...basesx.asp i think i won't, mainly because of

- the ghey interface in SX (this may sound silly to some but it is quite important to me, i appreciate the basic/quiet looks of 5.1. less unwanted visual impulses & distractions.)

- the hassle of losing data and reorganising files/folders when wanting to use old .all files in SX (and there's many files i'd still want to be able to work on.)

- more cpu power needed for SX

one of the reasons i would still consider the upgrade to SX is the apparent ease of automation/controller programming, at which 5.1 indeed ain't the easiest.

any opinions? important things i'm overlooking?
1) Workflow in SX is WAY WAY more streamlined than in VST, you just need to allow yourslf time to adjust

2) Never had any probs importing VST songs to work on.

3) True, but its not a concern. Less is more when it comes to engineering Wink

That's v good to know, although in my comment I purely meant the looks of it, e.g. this: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Aug02/im...ader.l.gif
...would nearly make me hallucinate, coming from my nice and grey VST arrange window Lol. But maybe that's a matter of having to get used to it, too.

Hmm sounds promising! But what about this note in the SOS review: "Most of the settings for effects plug-ins can be imported, but not their automation data." You didn't have problems with that?

Have you had VST and SX installed both at the same time btw? I'm curious if that's possible without conflicts.

Cheers
