Hawks and Doves "Year One" lp - No Idea Records 2011 - ex Planes Mistaken for Stars

I slept on this Hawks and Doves 2011 lp. catching up this weekend as we speak. apparently there's new Planes Mistaken for Stars forthcoming, which is good news! Smile tortured never sounded so soulful.. discounting Greg Dulli or Mark Lanegan of course. heh. catch the debut 1999 PMFS Deep Elm Recs release now available via donation on the bandcamp.

In the early to mid 1990s - when incidentially I was in my early to mid-teens myself - I was into many different musical styles, also into punk/metal next to dance. Might sound strange, but not for me. among my fav bands from back in the day were Helmet, L7, Sepultura, EyeHateGod, Type O Negative (a guilty pleasure taking into account their somewhat questionalbe political stance) Suicidal Tendencies, The Dwarves, New bomb turks and I am sure several I forgot to mention right now.

However I had to make a decision and took the road to "dance". I just couldn't muster all the time to listen to punk/metal besides getting deeply into Dancemusic, especially junlge.

so.....

there's a new Braid record out. its called "No Coast", have you heard??

I'm listening as I post.

Thoughts:

- I listen to this as I would say.. a Hey Mercedes record.
- its Braid
- has it really been 16 years now?
- some songs are "meh"
- some songs are HEY!!
- its Braid
- there are times when I hear Shudder To Think in their sound, more so now.
- I usually judge a band's new lp by playing on shuffle amongst their entire discography, which I may have to do
- its Braid!
- its summer, Braid usually = summer right?
- i'll prolly be in love with this by the end of the week.

Braid.. Shudder To Think

Funeral At The Movies (1991), Ten Spot (1990) - Discord Records

I have this thing with Shudder To Think. they've always resonated, even when I didn't know anything about the band, but found the records in the public library when I was a kid. Remember borrowing records from your local public library?? I first heard The Jam, GBH, full Siouxsie and the Banshees lp's and such from borrowing records from the library.

My local public library had Shudder To Think lp's in their bins. Dischord Records releases in your public library? not bad eh? props to whoever was in charge of the music sections then. heh.

Everything contrary to punk, (post) hardcore, and the like were evident with Shudder To Think. A singer that can sing, maybe too well for a Dischord band, they had hooks, a complete ambience, they were POP, always a contradiction, with an immediate unique identity that you don't find from hardcore, post or otherwise from those years. Craig Wedren really freaked people the fuck out - effeminate, the lullaby voice, which was the key equation in that contradiction. I thought they were trippy as fuck, entirely at home in their own space. for real. That's what I love about Shudder To Think. They didn't give a fuck.

I still think these records are amazing. Shudder To Think often get overlooked within that era of Dischord Records, which is all pivotal to what we hear now. I'm really picky with Dischord Records, and I have to say, Shudder To Think are one of my faves ever from the Dischord catalogue.

these records rule.

still

End of A Year, Self Defense Family - 2003 to present

or whatever they're calling themselves these days.

I'm a big fan. one of the best things going in recent years imo. the band continues with a revolving door personel, but still carrying on with it all. somewhat polarizing depending on which vibe or release you first got into the band with. I like it all personally. Rites Of Spring et all.. the inspiration continues. I should go for a full Self Defense Family discog listening session soon, its been a bit. Wink

Amebix

If you were able to catch the "Risen - A History of Amebix" 2009 documentary that was kicking around for a bit, you know it was a great piece! Apparent label hassles have made the documentary extinct these days, which is a shame.

I first heard Amebix on a mixtape that a friend made for me way back when. Its all been a curious journey since. when I'm in the mood, Amebix is there. for sure.
